Correct me if I am wrong, but years ago I collected a list of neopronouns by year of coining (only before 2000 otherwise things would get a bit out of hand very quickly). I wanted to share this list with you all!

History of English Neopronouns:

• Ou (1789)

• Ne/Nim/Nis/Nis/Nimself (1850)

• Ve/Vim/Vis/Vis/Vimself (1864)

• Ze (1864)

• Thon/Thon/Thons/Thons/Thonself (1884)

• E/Em/Es/Es/Emself (1890)

• He’er/Him’er/His’er/His’er/Him’erself (1912)

• Hir (1920)

• Ae/Aer/Aer/Aers/Aerself (1920)

• Tey/Tem/Ter/Ters/Temself (1971)

• Xe/Xem/Xyr/Xyrs/Xemself (1973)

• Te/Tir/Tes/Tes/Tirself (1974)

• Ey/Em/Eir/Eirs/Eirself (1975)

• Per/Per/Pers/Pers/Perself (1979)

• Ve/Ver/Vis/Vis/Verself (1980)

• Hu/Hum/Hus/Hus/Humself (1982)

• E/Em/Eir/Eirs/Emself (1983)

• Ze/Hir/Hir/Hirs/Hirself (1996)

• Ze/Mer/Zer/Zers/Zemself (1997)

• Zhe/Zhim/Zher/Zhers/Zhimself (2000)

Sources:

(I am aware that not all of these are the peak of credibility, so please let me know if any of them are incorrect.)

...you do know nobody is seriously going to use er/ihm/sein for you right? at this point you're just making a mockery of actual trans struggles.

er/ihm/sein is german for he/him/his dumbass

hey while we're reblogging this post i just want everyone to know that this post, while funny, shows a genuinely worrying trend in the trans community. while everyone is so furious about neopronouns, you are actively excluding people whose languages do not use the standard american/westernized pronoun sets of he/him or she/her or they/them. like, as funny as it is that someone genuinely could not tell the difference between neopronouns and non-english pronouns, i do genuinely think it fucking sucks that i can't even have my own goddamn languages pronouns in my bio without getting told i'm a mockery of ''actual trans struggles'', when i myself am a trans person.

Neopronouns are not a “tumblr fad”. Gender neutral pronouns other than they/them have existed in the English language for actual centuries. They are not harmful to the trans community.

To those who are against neopronouns, you’re acting against the evolution of a language and acting against something that’s been around for far longer than you’ve been alive.

To those who use neopronouns, your pronouns are not harmful. You do not deserve to be made to feel ashamed for your pronouns.

Op you can’t just drop this and expect us to not ask what the old school gender neutral pronouns were!!! How on earth are all my nb friends gonna pick the dapper pronouns????

I found these doing VERY minimal research:

•Ey/Em/Eir (1975, created by Christine M. Elverson)

•E/Em/Es (1890, created by James Rogers)

•Per/Pers/Perself (1976, Used in a novel by Marge Piercy)

•Thon/Thos/Thonself (1858, Created by Charles Crozat Converse)

•Ve dates back to 1980

•Xe dates back to 1973

•In 1789, William Marshall confirmed the use of both“a” and “ou” as a replacement for he/she/they and even i.

•Co/Coself (1970, created by Mary Orovan)

•Ne (1850, appeared in print in 1884)

•En (1868, mentioned by Richard Grant White)

•Han/Hans/Hanself (1868)

•Un/Uns/One (1868)

•Se/Sis/Sim (1884)

•Hesh/Hiser/Himer (1879)

•Hi/Hes/Hem (1884)

•Le/Lis/Lim (1884)

•Hersh/Herm (1884)

•Ip/Ips (1884)

•Hae/Haes(Hais)/Haim (1884)

•Tha/Thare/Them(Thon) (1885)

•Zyhe/Zyhe’s/Zyhem (1885)

•Ir/Iro/Im (1888)

•De/Der/Dem (1888)

•Hor/Hors/Horself (1890)

•Ith/Iths (1890)

Sources for these as well as many others that I didn’t add due to the list getting too long can be found here.

An interesting note is that in the modern language a lot more people use neopronouns then you would expect!

•Yo is a majorly African American pronoun coined in 2004 and used by Middle School students In Baltimore, Maryland.

•Fae/Faer, coined in 2014, is used by 4.3% of participants in the 2019 Gender Census.

Plus a vast variety of newly coined pronouns that you will have seen commonly floating around!

Neopronouns have existed and been recorded for a long time, they are not a new concept, nor are they mogai or a tumblr concept. They are not modern, there have just been many modern adaptions to already existing pronouns.

“I get that some people want to be called it, but I won’t do that! I would hate myself for calling someone it! It’s dehumanizing!”

Yeah, uh. Other people’s pronouns?

They aren’t about you

You know what’s more dehumanizing than using someone’s pronouns when it’s pronouns are it? Refusing to respect someone’s own pronoun choice because you don’t like the pronoun it uses, and then acting as if you’re doing that - misgendering it or announcing you would - for its own good.

Nah, fuck off. Gendering people correctly isn’t about your comfort. Using the pronouns someone’s chosen isn’t about your comfort.

If it’s legitimately triggering to you to use it pronouns for someone who’s told you that it is it’s pronoun, because you, as a trans person, have been called it in a dehumanizing way? That’s awful and you didn’t deserve that. But it’s on you to stay away from people who use it as a pronoun, and to shut the fuck up about the people who choose to.

Stop saying “I get it but I just can’t do it,” stop literally broadcasting to the world that you value your own comfort over someone else being gendered correctly. Just shut up and keep it the fuck to yourself and stop dehumanizing people by way of pretending to care.

binary people need to realize that no one is asking y'all to remember the names and definitions of every nonbinary label that exists. there aren’t any nonbinary folks out here hiding behind the bushes, just waiting to ambush y'all and give you a spelling test. we don’t carry pop quizzes in our back pockets just waiting to pull them out and interrogate you about what this word or that word means.

i doubt there are even any nonbinary people who remember all of the labels nbs can use—i know i don’t! i have the memory of a damn goldfish and i have to use google every time someone makes a request on this blog for posts about certain identities because there are only like 5 i can confidently remember how to spell and define on any given day.

our labels are not for you or about you, they are for us. they are for our own personal use. they are for our piece of mind from being able to put a name to our experiences. all we want from you is to be treated with basic decency, to believe us when we say we are what we are, and to not try to argue with us like you know what we feel and what we need better than we do.

what we don’t want is you asking us, indignant and aghast like the hundred other binary folks before you, “but how can you expect me to POSSIBLY remember all those labels?!” before you walk off in a huff and go on to treat nonbinary like crap and deny we even exist because widening your worldview a bit is too much work — we are not asking you to remember jackshit except for how to treat others how you’d want to be treated.

You can’t say you support nonbinary people if you’re going to add an “except for”

“except for transtrenders”

“except for those weird made up genders”

“except for mogai hell genders”

“except for people doing it for attention”

“except for people with nounself pronouns”

The minute you add those two little words you are declaring that you get the final word on who is “really” nonbinary. You’re saying you are more of an authority on someone’s gender than they are. For some unknowable reason you’ve got the audacity to claim you can judge people as acceptably nonbinary or as faking it.

If you feel like you get to make the call on whether someone is nonbinary or not instead of, you know, believing they know themselves better than you do and respecting their gender and identity then you do not support us. Please do not claim you do.
