Because I was now a man, I could not speak about what it was like to be a woman. Because I had been a woman, I could never really speak about what it was like to be a man. Do the math: I could not speak. It was a double erasure, a double bind, in which every experience I had was false, and so nothing I said was credible. I could no longer derive authority from my experiences before transition, and shouldn’t even cite them — I had never “really” been a woman, so those things hadn’t happened — but those experiences could always be weaponized against me to prove I wasn’t “really” the man I claimed to be. They call it erasure, when this happens. I wasn’t prepared for how literal the term was. Every day, I could feel myself disappear.

genuinely can’t understand trans people who define themselves with the medical concept of “gender dysphoria”

it’s like “Oh yes, I acknowledge that this diagnosis was invented by 12 cis doctors in 2013, two of whom have since been disgraced, one of whom was Ray Blanchard, and furthermore I acknowledge that they made it up based on a data set that we have every reason to believe is unreliable, something that was pointed out in the medical literature at the time.

However I also believe they nailed it. 100% correct, no notes. Their label accurately describes me and every trans person and if someone asks me to reinterpret my experience in the light of these historical facts, well they’re oppressing me, a person who has DysphoriaTM.”

like babes what?! What?!!

There is increasing understanding among medical and mental health clinicians that Gender DysphoriaTM is a means to an end as a billable code that allows trans people to get insurance coverage for medical interventions related to transitioning. ***

Unfortunately lay people (and a lot of clinicians lbr) miss the fucking point of this and the framework allows for a lot of really damaging assumptions about what being trans entails/requires because our other frames of reference for it are like, cosmetic surgery and actual diseases. Medical transition throws a wrench in the structure of how we deal with both of these because it crosses the line between those structures.

*** in American systems

Like, Gender DysphoriaTM is a billable code sure. But it’s also very convenient for those mental health clinicians that this code forces every trans person to see a psychiatrist and then gives that psychiatrist a horrifying amount of power over the life of that trans person.

Which is why so many mental health clinicians fight tooth and nail to maintain Gender Dysphoria as the billable code and resist a switch to lighter physosomatic billable codes, which would allow any doctor to give a trans person access to transition care based on a quick informed consent based conversation.

They’re protecting their own jobs and paychecks at the expense of trans people’s lives. And to justify that to themselves, they’re constantly mentally switching between ‘Gender DysphoriaTM is a billable code’ and ‘Gender DysphoriaTM is a real thing and I have a real job, I am not just a box checker with an obscene amount of unjust power over other people’s bodies’.
