@taichiyagamiweek Day 7, July 13th 2024: Taichi & Hikari

Taichi and Hikari have always had a very close and loving sibling relationship ever since they were toddlers, with Taichi being the (sometimes overly) protective big brother and Hikari being the very attached (and sometimes overly dependent) little sister - it's a pattern that is deeply intertwined in their character arcs and development and thus endlessly interesting to witness. Taichi has to overcome his guilt towards her and, even if his protectiveness never fully disappears, grows aware of how capable and strong-willed she can be. Hikari, on the other hand, needs to learn to speak up and make decisions for her own sake without relying too much on others, Taichi in particular - and through the years, they get better at it, finding ways not to idealize the other too much and breaking through codependent tendencies. Nevertheless, they are incredibly proud and supportive of each other, can share lighthearted and teasing moments - and are also getting more comfortable calling each other out if they disagree or have issues with the other's behaviour. As adults, they may struggle a little to stay in touch regularly, but if it comes down to it, they will always, without a shred of doubt, move mountains for one another.

Hehe, well, to summarize some positivity about Takari regardless: I do love that they ARE consistently glued to each other at the hip. While people who don't ship it may find it weird, whereas people who DO ship it may be frustrated with them not being confirmed as canon, it's really nice to see that they never drifted apart. Regardless of time passing, regardless of the universe, with all their parallels and developments. And the most recent audio drama proved to me personally that they're perfectly compatible trolls together that enable and have a wonderful time with each other in private (and thus also "off duty").

As for Meichi, I hope it actually comes across when I say that, to me, their set-up would be the ultimate wish-fulfillment: Imagine being ridden by self-doubt and insecurities, are moving to a new place and be embraced, encouraged and supported by the literal sun? Granted, Taichi himself is suffering from self-doubt and insecurities just as much at the time they meet - but he also feels naturally drawn to and protective of "the different/weird ones" and thus, it also seems like their bond may give him another (external) reason to move forward, to re-discover his natural strengths. They're going through similar experiences, loss-related trauma may linger in both of them, and while they still need to work on their communication skills, they are empathetic and soft towards each other - and thus have met at just the right time in their lives.

I am fully up for it! As we have previously discussed, Daikari/DaiHika is a ship I usually do not put a lot of emphasis on, but that's exactly what this game is about!

And it's actually the most intriguing set-up to look at them post-02 - because that is, in my opinion, the time when Daisuke is much, much closer to having figured himself out. While I maintain that his early crush on Hikari was fueled by tons of underlying insecurities that caused him to act in ways that don't show his true self and qualities, because he was trying too hard to impress... The course of the events of 02 helped him to understand what's more important. And Hikari could tell that he was changing as well - she was a bit more wary towards his brashness at the beginning, but kept witnessing the goodness of his heart through his actions of kindness and selflessness and that helped her to grow more fond of him as well.

Around the time of Kizuna/The Beginning, they're young adults working hard to achieve their dream careers while also managing to make time to meet up with each other and the rest of their mutual friend group. They were among the first Chosen Children who knew very early on what they wanted to strive for - and I believe that they're genuinely vocal and encouraging about that. Daisuke hearing Hikari say something like "I like that you're so straightforward" would push him over the moon and work even harder to make it happen - not to impress her, but because he'd be genuinely happy that his biggest dream is being valued. That HE is being valued. The same goes the other way round: Teenage!Hikari was still a bit insecure about whether her path was the right one, so he'd be the first to tell her that she shouldn't doubt herself. And that's what she desperately needs to hear - that she needs to work on what she wants for her OWN sake, not for anybody else.

It's a theme for both of them - they used to doubt their own skills for way too long and hid behind big words and smiles respectively. But they also both feel very strongly about the things that are important to them, so the older they get, the more I see them capable of enabling each other. To be kinder to themselves, to not take everything so incredibly seriously. They just need to be able to be honest about their feelings and not just trying to put each other at ease - meaning they also have to openly mope! So that'd include: for Hikari to visit Daisuke at his workplace and for him to cook her an extra big bowl of ramen since she forgot to eat through the course of the day - and he'd also have her favourite dessert ready at the back of the store; for Hikari to bring over books about business management she had picked up after talking to Ken, Miyako and Koushirou about it to support him; for them to ramble about everything and nothing (and definitely about Taichi) and letting go of the stress of the day in a light-hearted way.

This also includes a potentially romantic route, in which they'd let lose enough to entrust each other with all their vulnerabilities and giving each other the comfort and love they deserve.

speaking of ships though, i think because i’m older that i finally see why daisuke and hikari would make a nice pair.

yes, he has his crush but he does grow out of it/stops idealizing her as 02 progressed, and she does tease him a lot, which can be annoying at times but tbh, she isn’t really comfortable being playful with just anybody. she’s probably one of the most reserved characters in the series, so for her to actually speak her mind to him and not tolerate everything from him, it’s so?? refreshing??

to me, it works because in order to be taken seriously, dai has to give hikari the respect that she should have rather than just claiming her just because of his own feelings. there’s so much value in that lesson. nonetheless, hikari already being aware that she doesn’t need daisuke (like not in a mean-spirited way, but she can be independent from him) is a great foundation for her because she’s able to set boundaries and learn what she really needs/deserves. if they ever did indulge in a romance, they’re able to be two separate beings that come together rather than two halves that are just that.

plus, daisuke sincerely cares for her opinion and i’m not saying that the others don’t, but hikari’s hardly in a situation where people even bother to ask since she’s usually agreeable. and oddly, even though everyone sees how alike taichi and dai are, hikari knows the differences. it seems like a negative thing initially, but she would also know dai’s strengths versus her brother’s weaknesses even when people praise the latter. he literally has an unconflicted heart of gold (when he’s not being petty jealous, fine) that’s not shy to express what he feels and i think that would appeal to her the best.

I call this A.M.V. & storyline, “the difference between ‘Interests’ you hate / can’t get anything (personally) worthwhile out of {the things Vademon forces directly on Koushiro in Ep 24 - False, empty, anti intellectual ‘concepts’ like “Cosmic Power” mentioned in the J.P.N version}, and Interests you ENJOY, and why they’re Important (to Koushiro Izumi’s canon Character Developments & Character traits across the entire series).” {Yes, INCLUDING in post 02 media like tri., Kizuna, and DigiAdv 2020.}

“Is it wrong to want to ‘KNOW’ Everything?” - Koushiro, genuinely questioning, to Vademon, Adventure Ep. 24 “I DON’T WANT TO KNOW! I ~~DON’T~~ want to kNOW” - Koushiro giving up Koushiro’s “Inquisitive Heart” (in American English U.S. dub, this was localized as “Curiosity”) … but it’s actually Koushiro’s ‘Inquisitive’ “Heart” “I want to Know! I WANT TO KNOW!” - Koushiro Izumi willingly regaining Koushiro’s Inquisitive Heart, at Ep’s End

A.K.A.: Why WAS Koushiro’s Crest “KNOWLEDGE”? (And why is “KNOWLEDGE” Important to Koushiro’s Whole Storyline?) {And why is finding your personal “KNOWLEDGE” Not A “Bad” Thing??} And why is it NOT bad to acknowledge such things & concepts AS, SPECIFICALLY, ‘KNOWLEDGE’? (Of course, a certain main storyline of Koushiro is tied in by or at the end too, but it’s not the only thing this time…)

And as an added bonus, this cover was sung by Natsuki Hanae himself!!! (Natsuki Hanae is Tri!Taichi’s J.P.N seiyuu {voice actor}!!)

Made in 2 hours, with another hour spent previewing & formatting this post. I must have re listened to this 50 times in a row because the track (it’s a semi common error with things I’ve made by now, I’ve noticed) glitched about 15 clips in, and then Ep 21 clips nearly made the whole thing crash. (Which also wasn’t even 30 clips in) The full amount of clips is 34, but the song is almost 3 minutes long. The clips used here are intended to be timed to mood of the song and the lyrics, (including some influence, if not entirely as I’m also taking from this J.P.N version, from the original English song) while also reflecting actual canon influence.

This is the J.P.N version of the song, so the lyrics are lightly adjusted! Unfortuntely, this one isn’t yet sub’d, so please rely on my reference for lyrics, thank you!! (I highly recommend reading them before watching!)

Clips used are from (mainly) Adventure Episode 24 (a Koushiro focus ep) until through to Tri’s “Kokuhaku” and “Soushitsu”.

The main scenes used are Koushiro relevant moments, (no major battle scenes here), a single shot of Tri!Taichi (Soushitsu / Part 4 relevant moment), and the middle moments of Kokuhaku where the Tri Chosen and Koushiro reunite in front of Taichi, from the middle end of Kokuhaku (the one previewed in trailers). A miniscule moment from DigiAdv 2020 Ep 14 is also used for emphasis, though this one mainly focuses on Adventure{s}!Koushiro, 2020!Koushiro is definitely included in this concept as well.
