you will never beat the biphobia allegations until you radically accept bisexuals who are stereotypical. you must accept the sluts, the polyamorous, the girls with straight boyfriends, the questioning, the confused, the ones who want to be another couple's unicorn, the ones who are in a phase and will eventually identify differently, and even the ones you suspect aren't truly bisexual but just want attention. take people at their word when they tell you who they are. let them live and express their identity as they see fit. happy bi visibility day

Also how many types of people do the stereotypes cover. I mean. By the time you list all the top ten most Insufferable Bisexuals you’ve listed a whole village of perfectly normal people

I’m open to being proven wrong on this, but I’m not currently convinced that there’s some of epidemic of canonically bi characters who are only seen in m/f relationships.

I’ve seen a chart some time ago showing that about 9 in 10 bi female characters on tv end up in endgame f/f relationships. The only reason it appears to have an epidemic of bi characters in m/f relationships is because people insist that bi characters who end up with, or mostly date, their own gender are actually gay so they don’t count 🤷‍♀️

you know what’s fucking sad is how absolutely thrilled i am when i see someone actually refer to a canonically bi character as bisexual because i’m so damn used to everyone on this site calling every bi character gay/lesbian that it’s a rarity to actually see the word bisexual used to describe them

Hey you know what's super funny about the idea of "good bi rep"?

For a character to be canonically bi you have to make sure and establish that they're attracted to multiple genders. Not all mediums allow you to get inside every character's head or show what they're thinking. Flirting can be read ambiguously, and god forbid they flirt with a character who's not into them and be read as pushy or predatory. So it can be super handy to just mention an ex or two! But you better not mention too many exes because that would make them a slutty bisexual which is (checks notes) bad, and you definitely better be careful about making them poly, because that might make them, uh... greedy. Oh, and those exes? They better be perfectly amiable breakups with no conflict or drama, because it's bad to represent queer people in toxic or abusive relationships (especially queer women! very bad), and you definitely can't have them have lost a partner if the partner was queer because that's "bury your gays..." You should probably also eliminate all trauma from their backstory, just to be safe. You should probably also make sure they're not involved in crime, deception, or anything of the sort, because that would make them "deviant" and a stereotype.

But don't worry! Once you've carefully crafted your nice, monogamous, experienced-but-not-too-experienced Lawful Good bi character, you will be rewarded with your audience deeming them "boring" and quickly passing them over for other characters. :)

Bi character is only stated to be bi by the creators outside of the canon source: "That doesn't count at all, they should have at least mentioned it in the source material!"
Bi character is said to be bi within the source material: "That doesn't count, because it was only mentioned!"
Bi character's sexuality is an important part of their character: "Here we go again with the thinking mlm and wlw's lives revolve around their sexualities, ugh!"
Bi character has a love interest of the opposite gender: "So they're basically straight, the creators just want Woke Points™."
Bi character has a love interest of the same gender: "So they're basically gay, like nice try but bi people are still underrepresented and this isn't representation."
Bi character has more than one love interest: "Classic stereotyping bi people as promiscuous, god!"
Bi character literally exists in media at all: "This is somehow bad and problematic!!"

What is biphobia?

While homophobia is the hatred against gay and lesbian people which presents itself in many different (often institutionalised) ways, biphobia is the hatred against bisexual people. Though there is some overlap with homophobia, biphobia has a lot of unique and bi-specific aspects. It can come from straight people, gay people and bi people themselves (we call that “internalised biphobia”).

  • not believing that bisexuality is “real” and therefore invalidating people who identify as bi
  • for example saying they are actually gay but too shy/scared/cowardly to “fully” come out of the closet
  • or saying that they are actually straight and just “doing it for attention”
  • the false believe that you can only truly be attracted to only one gender (”I can’t imagine being attracted to more than one gender, so how could anyone else?”)
  • thinking it’s “just a phase” (often said about and towards bi kids/teenagers to invalidate them) and that they will eventually “pick a side” (note that there’s nothing wrong about it if it is just a phase for some people. but that doesn’t mean it’s like that for all bisexual people)
  • stereotyping bi people as “greedy” or “confused”
  • “they just need to make their mind up”
  • “they have threesomes all the time”
  • “don’t date a bi person, they are all unfaithfull cheaters.”
  • “they can only be happy if they date a man and a woman at the same time.” (Disclaimer: Some bisexual people fullfill these steroetypes and there’s nothing wrong with it. It’s okay to have threesomes or be polyamorous if all participating parties consented to it. But it doesn’t mean all bisexuals are the same!)
  • thinking of bisexuality as half gay/half straight instead of its own unique sexual identity
  • “how many percent gay are you?”
  • “are you like 50/50?”
  • “what gender do you prefer?”
  • repeatedly speaking over bi people when they want to define bisexuality and/or talk about biphobia
  • “bi means ‘two’ so you can only be attracted to men and women” - actually the bi community keeps saying that the term has evolved to mean “more than one gender” which means it is inclusive of non-binary people as well
  • “bisexuality excludes trans people” - nowhere does it say that bisexual people are only attracted to cisgender men and women, trans men are real men and trans women are real women, so of course they are included in bisexuality.
  • bisexual erasure
  • for example assuming someone in a same-gender relationship has to be gay and in a different-gender relationship has to be straight
  • in media when TV shows/movies/books refuse to use the word “bisexual” about a character who clearly showed interest in or was intimate with people of more than one gender
  • using “gay” as an umbrella term to mean LGBTQIA+ (”gay rights”, “gay marriage”, “gay pride”) which is not just bisexual erasure but actually erases every other letter in the acronym except the G
  • labelling openly bi celebrities as “allies” (e.g. Lady Gaga, Drew Barrymore, Billy Joe Armstrong)
  • mislabelling bi celebrities as gay - ever wondered why Freddie Mercury is known to be “the most famous gay celebrity”? Well, he identified as bisexual. [EDIT: There’s been so much debate about Freddie’s sexuality, proving he was gay, proving he was bi - I honestly find it kinda obnoxious and refuse to engage into discourse about a dead man’s sexuality. Whether he was gay or bi - I think you still get the point I was trying to make with this bullet point which is that bi people often get mislabeled as gay/lesbian and that’s bisexual erasure.]
  • and last but not least: saying that biphobia is just “misdirected homophobia” denies the fact that there are a lot of bi-specific issues
  • bi people are less likely to be out to their intimate partner, their families/friends, their doctors
  • they are more likely to suffer from mental health issues and experience intimate partner violence

What all of this is showing us is that bi people have specific needs and face unique problems that won’t vanish just by fighting homophobia. There is no trickle down effect for bi people because as said above: we are not half gay so many resources for gay people don’t apply to us. We need our own resources and representation because biphobia is not the same as homophobia.

[CLAMP INTERVIEW]

“Ohkawa: (…) I am glad that the readers are happy that Sakura and Syaoran got together, but that anyone would think it’s because they make a normal couple… it’s a little disconcerting. Sakura didn’t chose Syaoran because he’s a boy close to her in age. If Syaoran had been a girl, if they had been far apart in age, as long as he was still Syaoran, I think Sakura would have fallen in love with him. It’d sadden me if you thought they’re a good couple because they’re normal.”

———————————————

This is just one of the many great quotes said by Ohkawa in this interview!

We’re two weeks away from the second chapter of “Clear Card arc”, and while we wait for it, how about looking back at this interview, taken from around the time the original series had just ended?

More CLAMP interviews to come!
