reblog if you consider the people youve befriended on this website (and other websites) to be real friends, even if youve never met them irl before

trying to prove something to my dad
@ august please be a little gentle with me I’m so tired
Unpopular opinion but literally not one person in the world should have their human rights violated
If one person’s rights can be waved away, so can yours
yes, even those people.
Fuck it, adding on: This is why it’s frustrating to see criminal defense lawyers getting a bad rep.
The right to a fair trial is a human right. In practice, a fair trial necessitates a lawyer. This means that even if somebody committed the worst crimes you could possibly imagine, they still deserve a lawyer.
Somebody has to defend them as a matter of human rights. As one of my professors said, way back in my first semester at uni: “Everybody deserves to have somebody in their corner.”
nb the source of criminal defense attorneys getting a bad rep is always, always copaganda. same with the incredibly bullshit narrative of “if you didn’t do anything wrong then why do you need a lawyer?” the purpose of both these terrible stupid pro-cop arguments are to deny you your legal rights.
Someone else said it very well here on this website:
A government whose people lose their rights once they become criminals has a very vested interest in making their critics criminals.
#God I Wish That Was Me
like jesus fuck dude. i’m so FUCKING tired of having to listen to straight people talk about how a gay romance or a trans character should ~add to the story~ as if straight romances and cis characters have ever had to have a reason to exist
one big thing i think people outside fandom (like, all fandoms, fandom in general, not any particular one) tend to misunderstand is they know it's a subculture of people who are weirdly deeply invested in fictional media, and they hear about drama caused by people in those subcultures being unhinged in not-fun ways, and they think the unhingedness comes from the fact of being overinvested in works of fiction.
which is a natural assumption, but in my experience that's not really the case? like in my experience the drama llamas in fandom are usually not the ones who are just genuinely very deeply into the fiction. i've known people who are basically thinking about star trek or x-men comics or supernatural pretty much 100% of their free time and ime that type of person is usually very nice and surprisingly functional in their regular life. when someone's a constant nexus of fandom drama it's usually not that they are obsessed with the actual work of fiction the fandom is about, it's at least one of the following:
and very often you get the same person doing 2 and sometimes even all 3 of these, and that's where the trouble really starts
Republicans say ‘fcuk your feelings’ then whine that they are unlikable.
Things that are okay: Having a headcanon about a character’s age/sexuality/gender/ethnicity.
Things that are not okay: Imposing your headcanon on others and harassing them if they don’t agree.
Things that are even less okay: Accusing someone of serious things such as homophobia/pedophilia/transphobia for something as stupid as not sharing the same headcanon as you.
Things that are the absolute worst: Cyber-bullying them for having a different view, creating hate blogs about them, making them want to take their own life (sadly, I’ve heard people attempt this because of these kinds of things happened to them)
critical thinking while consuming media is important but some of you really are like "if you enjoy a cartoon with flaws you will never achieve happiness"
Sometimes I see people be like "I hate when female characters have conflict why can't they just all be BEST FRIENDS like in real life!" Like damn I'm glad your experiences with other women have been so great but sometimes--like even outside of the bullying, the abuse, etc--sometimes two women will just have different personalities and will not like each other that much and it's not necessarily sexist it's just how people are sometimes.
What you say: [Q]abbalah is part of the Western Tradition of magic and mysticism!
What you mean: we stole it long enough ago that we don’t have to give it back
What I hear: you don’t care about Jewish people at all
What you’ve communicated: there actually isn’t a “Western Tradition” in the same way there’s no such thing as “White culture,” and what you actually mean is that your spirtual ancestors were colonists and Xian hegemonists who took what they wanted, and now you want their theft as your inheritance and the Jewish mysticism they stole as your heirloom
[AGGRESSIVELY ATTEMPTS TO ENJOY SOMETHING WHILE IGNORING HALF OF THE FANDOM]
Male Character: *fucks up 100 times* Fans: “No one is perfect. He’s flawed so there is room for development!”
Female Character: *is not the epitome of perfection* Fans: “Sorry. I just hate this character.”
Male Character: *is perfect*
Fans: It’s an awesome power fantasy! It’s so inspiring!
Female Character: *is above average in any skill*
Fans: mmm… it’s fine I guesssss but why does she have to be such a mary sue??? just asking because I’m not sure it’s realistic…. hmmm…
This becomes 600% more depressing when you remember the majority of fandom participants are women.
Internalized Misogyny
tumblr is all for traumatized, mentally ill, and battered characters…oh that is until they start showing signs of being traumatized, mentally ill, and battered such as: anger, severe anxiety, poor social skills, and symptoms that aren’t someone quietly having a panic attack
I think one of the reasons I hyperfixate so much on Taichi and Koushirou’s relationship in specific even though I really love exploring all of them is just that for most of the kids and their friendships/potential romances there’s so much meta on them and so much discussion even if it’s like, “x character ate spaghetti so they clearly love y character,” and I think it’s all honestly fun and great but just
Taichi and Koushirou have this incredibly wonderful bond that only deepens throughout adventure and they remain two of the closest digidestined from 01 all the way into 02. It’s really not subtext and the two of them spend an incredible amount of time together. While Our War Game is a different director it still honestly showed their progression into being incredible friends and went out of it’s way to show they were two of the closest– neither of them even knew Yamato or Mimi were out of the city or even the country or what Jyou was doing that day, for instance. They always seem to be turning to each other for dire situations and they bring a different strength to the table that’s quintessential to the whole adventure because you really can’t have one without the other and their whole relationship is so incredibly natural, ups and downs and everything. No matter how you want to shape it, they just work well together and it’s so wholesome and amazing and there’s just so much of them to explore further.
But finding anything about them is so hard. If you find posts about Taichi they tend to completely forget Koushirou matters at all to him. Entire blogs will dissect every hair on his head, but you would never know he has a friend who isn’t Yamato and if you’re lucky maybe they’ll mention Sora. And if you’re lucky to find meta on Koushirou you might get a glimpse of Taichi here and there, but nothing about how much they really do encourage and help each other overall. In general there tends to be a complete imbalance that acts as if only Koushirou puts value into their relationship and Taichi just barely acknowledges him– but it’s wholly untrue. There’s plenty of other things, but just even when you think about Taichi’s most emotional arc the character who was there with him and for him was Koushirou– and he was chosen to be with Taichi twice. Taichi trusts him. Taichi asks him to watch Hikari as Taichi protects both of them. He actively cares for Koushirou, too. It’s really there throughout the show and them being best friends is not something that was invented by Digimon 2020.
But I just feel like overall we never really get past this wall of, “Hey wait, do you guys think they were friends?” to look at all the other deeper things between them and then even that’s riddled with meta on other characters and misconceptions and it’s like such few posts exist on some of the deeper level things because it just goes right back to talking about the other relationships and I’ve just been here too long
While I love the Digimon fandom, after spending time in other fandoms I’ve come to realise how negative it can be. For the most part, it’s full of talented & creative people, but sometimes the sheer amount of hate can get me down. It was the first fandom I’ve ever been in, and it’s the one that helped shaped my style of art
