So, here I am

All right, I've finally decided I might as well get on Tumblr.

I specialise in Harry/Hermione and Harry/Hermione/+ fanfic; Irish-language content; and heavily-armed Luna Lovegood.

People in badly written fantasy stories will usually talk about the major historical events of their world and how magic has affected the lives of everyone, but ask a person in the real world to describe the effects of WWI and the invention of the combustion engine on modern life and they’d probably couldn’t tell you.

Broke: every character seems to know everything about the history and lore of the world

Woke: most characters can’t tell you much besides the basics but there are some that can tell you more complete but specific parts

H Y P E R W O K E: Every character tells you a wildly different version of the past and what effects it has on the present, ranging from the government is an imperialist, colonizing body obsessed with power to the one true ruler was sent by the gods and has smote down anyone who got in his way to “Oh you mean Jeff, the quote unquote tyrant of the west? I knew that guy! He was alright, never did anything wrong really just wanted some soup.” And there’s no way to tell what actually happened

I like your thinking

really sorry to all my followers but I’m reblogging this every time it’s on my dash

Don’t you dare apologize. I love whenever this post comes around.

The world needs more stories where characters have strong and detailed opinions about (for example) ancient ruins and their local technology and/or magic, but you've no way of knowing who's genuinely knowledgeable and who's a nutcase à la Erich Von Däniken or that guy who won't shut up about how he gets incredible gas mileage with This One Weird Trick.

Harmione fics ❤️

Does anyone know if there are any au fanfictions about Harry and Hermione meeting in muggle school as kids before Hogwarts?

I'd love to read some, so if anyone could help me out, that'd be great! Thanks in advance!

I've seen a few, although the names aren't coming to me at the moment. I think I even wrote one myself back in Livejournal days, although it's not on my AO3.

Stone by stone are castles built. Keep working on your Irish and the day will come. And anyhow, go ahead and write the fic, even if you don't show it to anybody else, just as practice for when you're ready to show it to an saol mór.

And if you need it beta'd, drop me a pm. I'm trying to promote fic i nGaeilge--all genres, all fandoms, all categories. We need more readership and more writers. Years ago, I wrote what was probably the first fanfic in Irish. The thing was awful, truth to tell--both in terms of the language and in terms of the quality of writing--but a decade later I went back and rewrote it as Ar Bhruach an Locháin Dhuibh

(And, of course I've never had a single comment on the bloody thing that wasn't a question in English about the language, so maybe the rewrite was a waste of time, but I feel better for it, at least.)

Go raibh míle! It's very kind of you to offer to beta for me and I will bear that in mind. It may be Some Time down the line before I'd be in a position to ask you though, because my Irish is extremely rusty and I've been saying that I "really want to" get it to a higher standard again for literally years now. I do usually get around to learning things I'm interested eventually, but my progress is usually very stop and start with things because of executive dysfunction stuff, my unharnessable hyperfocus tearing off in a new direction every few weeks, and my perfectionism inhibiting me from doing anything until I can do it to a very unrealistically high standard.

That said, I got a workbook and DVD in the post yesterday that I am going to try and chip away at. It's an intermediate/advanced course, so hopefully it is not too beyond me. The DVD has two hours of interviews with native speakers (unsubtitled) and the workbook has full transcriptions of the interviews and exercises based on them. There was a website with more resources, but someone else seems to own the domain now :(

Thank you for promoting and writing fic i nGaeilge! That's so cool and I'm happy that you're putting in the hard graft even in the face of mostly indifference or confusion from Anglophone fandom.

Go ndéana a mhaith duit! Agus go raibh maith agat féin! I definitely know what you mean about the cocktail of executive dysfunction and perfectionism. It's my least favourite drink, but I keep finding myself halfway through a glass of it.

Good on you for getting the workbook and DVD! It's a pity about the domain. If you'd care to share which one it is, I could ask around and see if I could track you down some of the additional resources. No guarantees, of course, but there are materials that circulate in the teaching community long after they disappeared from publication.

And thank you! To be honest, I really need to get back on the horse as far as fic i nGaeilge goes.

I've seen a good number of Catgirl!Hermione fics where Hermione's Polyjuice accident is never (fully) reversed. Does that count?

Contramancer' s Amber and Emerald is the first purely Harmony example that springs to mind, but I'm sure I've seen others.

That being said, a lot of them are Harmony-plus. (Which I personally enjoy and write, but YMMV)

since a ton of people are getting into music as gaeilge because of hozier, can i recommend my fave artist, róisín seoighe? she's a native irish speaker and language ambassador whose lyrics often involve the preservation of irish culture and deep rage against colonization. níl mé marbh ("i'm not dead") makes me cry like a baby and sin do lamh ("reach out") makes me want to burn all of colonialism down. she's also done several collabs with imlé, another EXCELLENT irish language band that does modern-feeling rock and dance music! my fave of their collabs right now is ÉAD ("jealous").

both artists have less than 1,700 monthly listeners on spotify simply because they sing in irish & they deserve more bc their music Really Is Excellent. translations of many songs are google-able & when there Aren't english translations, it's really good practice for people learning irish!

☝️ É seo!

If there was a way to run SUPER MEGA AD BLOCKER on this website I fucking would

“Please oh please open up your computer to a porn virus! If you don’t you’re evil!”

Freeloader Comin’ through!

We didn’t start this war internet users have with ads - We might have moaned about banner ads, but it was only when they started making noises when we might be listening to music or a podcast or whatever, causing two sound sorces at once, that we started trying to block ads universally rather than just a specific type of ad (pop ups).

And since then ads have gotten worse - Actual malware rather than merely breaking one of the fundamental sins of web design - though shalt not autoplay anything with sound. And the more aggressive a website is with ‘please turn off adblock’ the less I trust it to bother to vet ads and advertisers to make sure they’re not installing malware.

Avatar
bramblepatch

Not to mention that the idea that avoiding ads is “freeloading” is hilariously backward. Advertisement is a transaction between the platform and the advertiser, the user has no obligation to provide the views/clicks the platform has promised. Using an adblocker isn’t freeloading in the same way that leaving the room to get a snack during a commercial break isn’t cheating the tv network.

Ok y’all, I work as a web developer and I’m here to tell you that you are 100% right and that it’s shit. SO I’m going to tell you how to get around websites that block you from using their website if you’re using an adblocker.

Every website uses a language called JavaScript; long story short it’s a website language that allows developers to do the crazy shit you see on websites. Now the easiest thing to do is to disable JavaScript to stop them from knowing you have an adblocker:

Oh no! I’m blocked from viewing the website. It would be a terrible shame if I were able to right click and select the “inspect” feature

Click the three dots in the top right and open the “Settings” Menu

And then scrolled down to “Debugger” and checked the “Disable Javascript Option”

And then just refreshed the page

A few years ago, when I was living in the housing co-op and looking for a quick cookie recipe, I came across a blog post for something called “Norwegian Christmas butter squares.” I’d never found anything like it before: it created rich, buttery and chewy cookies, like a vastly superior version of the holiday sugar cookies I’d eaten growing up. About a year ago I went looking for the recipe again, and failed to find it. The blog had been taken down, and it sent me into momentary panic.
Luckily, I remembered enough to find it on the Wayback Machine, and quickly copied it into a file that I’ve saved ever since. I probably make these cookies about once a month, and they last about five days around my voracious husband - they’re fantastic with a cup of bitter coffee or tea. I’m skeptical that there is something distinctively Norwegian about these cookies, but they do seem like the perfect thing to eat on a cold day.
Norwegian Christmas Butter Squares
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 egg 1 cup sugar 2 cups flour 1 tsp vanilla ½ tsp salt Turbinado/ Raw Sugar for dusting
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Chill a 9x13″ baking pan in the freezer. Do not grease the pan.
Using a mixer, blend the butter, egg, sugar, and salt together until it is creamy.  Add the flour and vanilla and mix using your hands until the mixture holds together in large clumps. If it seems overly soft, add a little extra flour.
Using your hands, press the dough out onto the chilled and ungreased baking sheet until it is even and ¼ inch thick.  Dust the top of the cookies evenly with raw sugar.
Bake at 400 degrees until the edges turn a golden brown, about 12-15 minutes. Remove from the oven. Let cool for about five minutes before cutting the cooked dough into squares. Remove the squares from the warm pan using a spatula.

So I tried this recipe.

And it is GREAT.

It basically makes the platonic ideal of commercial sugar cookies, only in bar form. When I give them to people (which I do a lot, because this is one of those simple recipes where the results seem very impressive), I just tell them they’re sugar cookie bars.

Life hack: add white chocolate chips and sea salt

I made these today for the equinox with sea salt caramel chips and they are simply amazing. Let’s see how long they last with six people in the house!

Noting for later (as we need more butter for this, and probably won’t do a grocery shopping till the weekend).

The OP version of this has become my go-to cookie for basically all things and I have a whole cohort of friends and colleagues who would murder each other to get them. Haven’t tried any add ons yet, since the base recipe is SO GOOD.

I’ve reblogged this before and I’m reblogging it again because I’m about to make it again tomorrow and I wanted to add my own tale of just how amazingly delicious it. it was SO incredibly simple to bake and with an extra dusting of brown sugar on top and served warm and soft they gift you with the taste of the nectar of the gods when paired with a small glass of milk. this image is from when I first made them a couple years ago:

GO. MAKE THESE !!!!

Needed to make a dessert in a hurry to bring to Thanksgiving, and this recipe worked excellently. I did not have the right kind of sugar for the topping, so instead I used a packet of lemonade powder, which gave it a nice citrusy zing.

Avatar
five-rivers

Making these for myself as a reward for doing the no fun thing I’ve been putting off. Added half a lemon of lemon juice and a bit more flour. Let’s see how it turns out. >:3

Verdict: tasty.

…These were very, very good. :) (Baked them in the “All Edges” Masterclass brownie pan.)

Because I'm only seeing other Jews posting about this, non-Jews I need you to be aware that for the past month or two there has been a wave of bomb threats and swattings at synagogues all across the US. They usually do it when services are being livestreamed. I haven't seen a single non-Jew talking about this. High holidays are coming up in a few weeks, which is when most attacks happen against our communities. We're worried, and we need people to know what's happening to us.

Duolingo when i forget a fada,i have completely changed the meaning of the word, it would requite most people to take a second thought to realise: very good!!!

Duolingo when i write fucking ag an mbean agus an gcailín instead of ag an mbean agus ag an gcailín, i have saved space and said a more speakable sentance: WRONG try again loser

Avatar
apaelfwine

Interesting. I've never used Duolingo myself, although I keep thinking I ought to try Swedish or Catalan just so I can have a better idea of what folk using it for Irish are going through, but I've heard of issues like this before and it strikes me as a serious flaw.

Aidhe, "ag an mbean agus ag an gcailín" is preferable in formal writing, but in speech the single preposition is as common or more so. And the demands of academic prose really aren't something anybody using Duolingo should be too very caught up in. If anything, concern for strict formal grammar at beginner-intermediate stages is the enemy of developing fluency, IMHO.

For that matter, córas an tséimhithe is equally correct, even according to the Caighdeán Oifigiúil. I would have written "ag an bhean agus ag an chailín," as would the native speakers from whom I have my Irish. Would Duolingo have accepted that? I confess I have my doubts.

I admit I've no notion of how to fix this. I don't know if the software can be made flexible enough--in the way a competent human teacher would be--to distinguish between multiple correct possibilities and the purely ungrammatical.

But it's something that stands out to me. I've seen learners developing greater fluency while using Duolingo, so I can't say I believe it's necessarily harmful, but I worry sometimes that it may be giving other folk a bad time and perhaps even discouraging them from keeping on.
