I'm joining the bandwagon because I've realised with the years that Mulan represents values and a strength of body, heart, mind and soul that every girl should wish and strive to attain. She's the true role model to look up to🐉🐉🐉❤️❤️❤️
One of the things I love most about Mulan, that’s rarely commented on, is just how much of a sacrificial lamb she is for her family before stepping in for her father in the army. Unlike Belle and Jasmine, who are fed up with society and make no attempts to conform for the sake of anyone else, Mulan trained and went to the match maker with the honest attempt at being the best bride she could be. If the match maker chose her that day, she would have willingly sold herself into the role that being a wife entailed to appease her family, at the sake of her own happiness and comfort because that’s how much they meant to her. If she hadn’t been perpendicular to the status quo and actually fit in, she would’ve gone into the marriage set up by the matchmaker and led a life of selflessness in a role that she never would’ve chosen for herself nor enjoyed.

Animated POC Week - Day 4 - Favourite Scene
Rewatched Mulan last night. (It’s still great) Did this doodle.
During the scene when Mulan decides to go to war instead of her father, she decides to do it while sitting on the foot of the Great Stone Dragon. The image of the dragon looking over Mulan is repeatpred several times throughout the sequence, and the bolts of lightning strike at significant times whenever the dragon is in sight. When Mulan takes her father’s scroll and when she is praying to her ancestors, the Great Stone Dragon can be seen. It is also engraved on the sword Mulan uses to cut her hair and the handles of the wardrobe containing the armor are in the shape of the dragon’s head. The dragon’s eyes glowing in the temple symbolizes Mulan’s role as protector of her family awakening, instead of the actual dragon.
The reason Mushu couldn’t wake the dragon is because the dragon was no longer there. Mulan is implied to be the Great Dragon that protects her family.
CHRIST HOW DID I MISS THAT AFTER ALL THESE YEARS
WHAT
HOOO SHITZ
I love this take. It’s also kind of interesting as often the chinese dragon is seen as quite a masculine symbol (the phoenix for the feminine) in Chinese culture. Which suits- because while historically there HAVE been female Chinese warriors- Mulan did step into what was broadly considered the world of men to protect her family.
I’ve heard a great deal about you, Fa Mulan. You stole your father’s armor, ran away from home, impersonated a soldier, deceived your commanding officer, dishonored the Chinese Army, destroyed my palace, and… you have saved us all.
okay I feel like I'm the only person who knows that Mulan was a real person and not talked about enough
Her story goes mostly how the Disney version went, except she didn’t go to war as a quest for self-discovery or because she felt as though she couldn’t make her parents proud. The sole and only reason she disguised herself as a young man was to take her Father’s place in the war.
So when she told her parents that she wanted to this, they were like wtf no you’re a girl and it’s chaotic out there. And you know what she did? She put on male clothes and challenged her own Father to a duel. Her dad was like ‘who the hell are you’ but accepted. When Mulan won and revealed herself as his daughter, he was like wOAH okay you can go. Basically she made sure to get her parent’s consent before going, so not only are her parents awesome, she was decent enough to not leave them hanging for 12 years.
Yes, she was at war for 12 years, but she not in fact meet a handsome general. Instead she BECAME a general. Eventually the war was won, and the Emperor was so impressed by her he wanted to wed the Princess to her. It was only then that she revealed she was in fact a woman. Then she accepted the rewards and went right back home to her normal life.
There is now even a crater on Venus named after her.
M u s i c of Mulan (1998)
Notice how Shan Yu doesn’t even question it or make a comment about “BUT YOU’RE A GIRL” he just instantly goes into a “I’LL TEACH YOU TO KILL MY MEN AND STEAL MY VICTORY” rage and I think about this a lot sometimes
((Well that might have to do with the fact that he’s a Hun. Women among the Huns had higher status than their Chinese counterparts and even some of their own men. Women were free to hunt and fight along side of the men, could choose their own husbands and divorce him if she choose to. There were even records of clans being led by women leaders. So for Shan Yu Mulan is just another soldier))
thank you, history side of tumblr.
He also might not have been able to see very well, due to whatever horrible disease has taken hold in his eyeballs.
Pretty serious Wilson’s Disease judging by the copper buildup in in irises, and apparent melanocytosis localized to his sclera.
