Soft whistles of the wind wavered through the air. It was like a small, soft whisper that bended through the green hills. The walls casted a giant shadow that slowly inched by as the sun readied across the horizon. It was still the afternoon and the birds chirped quietly.
Levi threw the rope and tied the ropes around the tree. The stallion huffed and whined as Levi finished tying, turning he patted the horses head. Mumbling a few gentle words that eventually tamed the horses nature. Gently Levi left his hand from his loyal pets face and wondered around the tree and could see legs comfortably positioned on top of each other.
He rolled his eyes but silently approached the figure lying in the grass. Spring had just begun and daises appeared everywhere. Levi sent a small disgruntled noise, awakening (Y/n) from a deep thought.
(Y/n)’s arms were thrown behind their head and had shifted their body into a more relaxed state. Though their physical apperance looked like it was in a collected trance, (y/n)’s eyes casted a different look. A very dark and deep in thought look that opposed their trance. Levi skeptically studied their face before (y/n) rolled to their side sparing a glance at him.
“Are you going to sit down?”
Levi hesitated for a moment. His eyes darted between the empty space of grass beside (y/n) and then back to them. He could’ve buckled down and done it had there been a layer of protection between him and the muddy ground. (Y/n) noted,
“Just use my coat” they pointed towards the small pile up of their clothes sitting idly on a stump nearby.
Levi scoffed rejecting the offer before placing his scout coat before the ground. Slowly he placed himself ontop, frequently shifting around to gain more comfort. (Y/n) sent a soft smile before turning back to the sky they were before watching. Levi’s hands clasped as his arms sat ontop of his legs. His eyes inspected the scenery as both individuals sat in silence.
“Thank you for sparing some time for me” (y/n) mumbled, their eyes suddenly inspecting the tiny bug on the side. “I know how busy you are”.
Levi scoffed but felt some sense of appreciation melt into his body like a warm ooze. There was so little time that was spent between these two. Occasional night trips and tedious glances towards each other was the most they could ever have.
Maybe it was because with Erwin’s and their fellow comerades death they both had drifted into a different world before. Both in different states of grief. And with the scout regiment taking a greater toll with Erwin’s recent and last gamble, Levi became more immersed into his line of work. And with the remaining few, it was only timely before they all had to venture out of safety again. Venture into the mouths that would eat them.
“I can’t remember a time where it was just like this” (Y/n) mumbled breaking the silence, “seemed so long ago”.
“Yes it does” Levi paused, turning his head he watched (Y/n) close their eyes.
(Y/n) opened their eyes, gazing into the clouds that flowed above them. Their hand slowly reached out as if to grasp them in mid air. Levi watched intently knowing this was a way (Y/n) could express part of their thoughts. Their hand slowly coiled back to their chest when they realised everything was too far away.
Levi leaned back his hands fidiling with the grass behind him. His eyes glossed over as he thought about his friends who had long passed. Where did the time go, he thought.
(Y/n) watched in awe, Levi was always stoic and serious and in glimpses like this. They could witness a more vulnerable Levi. But they couldn’t blame him, this line of work was horrific and it wasn’t entirely his fault when he suddenly shut them out. There was a timeframe and a thought of a wedding years earlier, Levi was once reluctant about it. (Y/n) smiled at the spring of the memory. But then Furlan and Isabel’s death transformed him into a much distant person and eventually the idea was cut loose. (Y/n) still knew the love between the two had remained, it survived even after all these years. Even after all their families and friends unfortunate endings.
Levi’s eyes studied the clouds as they morphed into various shaped. He noted that (Y/n) had stopped pushing for the idea of a wedding years ago after the death of his family. He knew he had become withdrawn and the flamboyant appearances deep in the night had stopped. (Y/n) wasn’t one to overstep, alike Levi they understood others take time and needed space.
“Do you think they know?” (Y/n) asked as they gazed back to the blue sky, their eyes glossed over in thought.
Levi turned his head to (y/n). The way they were positioned made his heart hammer into his chest. The fresh daises decorated around them as stands of (y/n)’s hair softly laid against the grass like roots from a tree. Their mouths partially opened as their eyes occasionally fluttered shut. Their nose slightly tinged red and their skin had radiated the sunlight off of them. It was like reliving the first moment Levi knew it was love. Their eyes connected and (Y/n) patiently awaited an answer.
“Yeah I think they know” Levi replied, his hand reached out slowly toying the strands of (y/n)’s hair.
Satisfied with his reply (y/n) went back to gazing. Their mind felt as though it was cleared from the misery and despair. Like a boat finally sailing after a terrible storm.
Levi saw the change in (y/n)’s body and understood they had felt better with his reply. Losing Farlan and Isabel might’ve cause friction between the two for a while yet they both knew it was timely before they would be back into each other’s arms, whispering sweet things again.
“If i die Levi. Don’t worry much about where you bury me” (Y/n) muttered, “and don’t beat yourself up about it”.
Levi nodded his head yet had still felt the slice of fear cut into him. (Y/n) was brilliant. They were swift and light in all missions. It took after a few close ones for Levi to finally stop worrying about their safety but the fear still lingered in the back of his mind.
(Y/n)’s hand reached for Levi’s hand bringing him forth from his thoughts. It didn’t surprise him. Their hands slowly enclapsed together, fingers woven together precisely. (Y/n) sent a warm smile.
A comfortable silence overcame them and it was though the world of misery, pain and death had washed behind them for a minute. This was only just a small portion of their freedom they had used.
A memory that will slowly be reflected back on in the deepest of nights.
