——————————
the trotting of horses could be heard just before the villages entry. the sun had barely hit the afternoon; children were either mindlessly playing games on the street or working in the field. A heatwave was predicted to arrive somewhere in between now and later on.
The scout regiment had been ordered to help nearby villages in rebuilding or farming under the orders of Erwin — another ulterior tactic to increase scout recruitment. Yet this village had become a favoured visiting and resting ground for the scouts.
Levi mumbled curses whilst heading towards the normal barnyards the horses were kept in. Despite it’s shabby and run-down apperance; it had upheld perfection and some cleanliness regardless of it's stench.
(y/n) watched closely from the well. Her hands timidly holding onto the rope, heaving the bucket up. beads of sweat forming on the edges of her face – possibly the worst time of the day to be out doing chores. (y/n) didn't mind however; it's all worth it.
Levi shook his head declining the offer the barnyard keeper had insisted previously. He jumped off of his saddle, leading the stallion into the barn.
(Y/n) bit her lip, eagerly studying the raven-haired male from behind. Each visit had became more interesting – (y/n)’s heart, as she would describe, would jump in and out of her chest. Her hands would sweat and she could feel every fibre in her body explode whenever the pair connected stares.
Much to her disappointment, these intriguing visits had only did so little between (y/n)’s fascination with Levi. Her mouth would dry up and her body would act on it’s own, taking leaps into the opposite direction Levi would walk.
“You might as well call yourself a stalker!” Her mother would yell.
(Y/n)’s hands slipped when Levi disappeared from her vision. The rope between her hands had sped up and in return gave a ghastly rashburn on her palms. (Y/n) yelled, cursing before grasping the rope again. She heaved again, bringing fourth the bucket of water to the stone edge of the well.
Her palms beginning to blister and droplets of sweat plummeting into the bucket of water.
She peered back to the barnyard and had briefly caught Levi strolling away, heading towards the castle reserved for the scouts. She sighed, knowing well enough that would likely be the last time she would see him before the next visit.
“Damn you” she muttered to the well before peering at her hands.
In annoyance, (y/n) winced grabbing the bucket. trotting back home.
Levi could feel her intense stare from behind. He waited a little longer than before, preparing for her arrival. Had she not stuck out like a sore thumb, Levi wouldn’t have bothered with his longevity appearances.
Before entering the village, Hange spoke about the small crush Levi had on the village girl. Thus naming the village as “Levi’s favourite place in the world” — much to his disagreement.
“I bet she’ll be waiting for you at the well again” Hange teased.
Levi clicked his tongue, shoving his comerades head out of his face. Hange however was not wrong. Levi cursed when he saw (y/n) approaching the well.
Her hair was messily tied behind her, with strands hastily glued to her face. Levi noted that despite her sloppy apperance — mud stains on her dress and hay resting in her hair — she possessed a beautiful face. In spite of knowing little of this mysterious woman.
Yet he found himself silently enjoying the way she would crinkle her nose in between quarrels with market merchants or at times would glance between her work and the sky. Eyes glossed over, she would slowly reach her hand above like she was a bird gliding to the clouds.
A precious yet stubborn woman, he thought.
As he lead his horse into the barnyard he couldn’t help but peer back to the well. Being hidden behind the large doors gave him an advantage to watch (y/n) from afar. Her face winced in pain once she realised she had let go of the rope.
Her eyes glistened with determination as her arms pulled the rope and bucket of water to the edge of the well. her hair glued to her face as the sun belt on her. Levi stared in awe.
he didn’t want to interrupt her chores and knew it was probably best for now to maintain the distance between them. as his mind was starting to draw inappropriate scenes between the two. Cursing to himself Levi walked away.
before entering the gates of the castle, Levi and (y/n) both took one last glance. Her small, disheveled figure stood on the route to her home as Levi stood still on the hill.
For the first time their eyes met and (y/n) could feel the similar sensation take place in her chest. Hastily turning away and starting her walk home, (y/n)’s mind could only recount to today’s events. She mumbled curses as her mind further lead astray.
Levi muttered another curse. His face turning away from the sun. Pink had slightly dusted across his cheeks as he mumbled more curses.
“Stupid crush” he murmured.
