How big is the ocean? - Scott Gass

View full lesson: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/how-big-is-… While the Earth’s oceans are known as five separate entities, there is really only one ocean. So, how big is it? As of 2013, it takes up 71% of the Earth, houses 99% of the biosphere, and contains some of Earth’s grandest geological features. Scott Gass reminds us of the influence humans have on the ocean and the influence it has on us. Lesson by Scott Gass, animation by Sandro Katamashvili.

Johann Ryno De Wet, Underland (2009)

“My methodology for creating images starts with writing down the events of the dream as soon as I’ve woken up. Sometimes I’ll make sketches to help me remember particular visual details of the dream. I use this information to look for subject matter in my environment that has elements matching those of the environment of the dream. I then use digital manipulation to combine different visual elements to create the environments and the atmosphere I experienced in the dream. This is an important part, as it is where I transform my vision into a tangible medium. The meaning of a dream is the most important part, as it forms the backbone of the project. I therefore focus on using dreams that have a lasting effect on me, or is meaningful to me in some way. To me life is an existential journey and dreams can play an important part in learning how to deal with the complexities of living and can help to see things from a different perspective. The materializing of my dreams into images is a process which helps me understand myself and life better.” - Artist’s Statement

Oceanic phytoplankton blooms imaged from space by Envisat.  Plankton blooms occur in regions of the ocean that have optimal temperature, sunlight, and nutrient supply for marine algae to grow exponentially.  Most blooms are composed of coccolithophores, single celled organisms which grow disk-like exoskeletons of calcium carbonate.  Trillions of these disks color the water white, showing the phytoplankton density and beautiful fluid dynamics of ocean currents.

underthevastblueseas: Underwater Rivers?

A group of amateur cave explorers discovered a river in Mexico with banks, trees and leaves just like an ordinary river, but with an additional metric shit ton of “WTF,” because they were hovering 25 feet over it in scuba gear when they discovered it.

While underwater water doesn’t seem possible, the “river” is actually a briny mix of salt water and hydrogen sulfide. It’s much more dense than regular salt water, so it sinks to the bottom and forms a distinct separation that acts and flows like a river.

Deep sea lakes look like normal lakes, complete with sandy and rocky shores. Scientist call these lakes “cold seeps,” but they’re a hotbed for life, because apparently waterfront real estate is a hot commodity under water, too. The “rocky” shores are actually made up of hundreds of thousands of mussels. Even weirder, the lakes under the waves have waves of their own.

My friend Chris said that costume I made (above) was the result of the Grim Reaper and Poseidon having babies.

The Past

Don’t grieve for the past The past is passed Never has with grieving, the past come back Think about the future Be joyful and happy Wait for rising of the sun

Life is short, be pleased, leave sadness and worries If there is no sea, get satisfied by a drop Life is short, be pleased, leave the past If there is no sea, get satisfied by a drop

It has been your fate what you have received Don’t complain of this world, this is the work of destiny

Life is short, be pleased, leave sadness and worries If there is no sea, get satisfied by a drop Life is short, be pleased, leave the past If there is no sea, get satisfied by a drop

The expensive life will pass, whether you want it or not Try to avoid your life from decaying Ask your wishes from God, because the mercy of God is unlimited

Life is short, be pleased, leave sadness and worries If there is no sea, get satisfied by a drop Life is short, be pleased, leave the past If there is no sea, get satisfied by a drop
