Not to mention the whole thing is just so out of character for the boy he knows.

Jason is loud, and confident and indifferent to the world. H rolls his eyes and scoffs at anything he thinks is not remotely worth his time.

Jason doesn’t care if he gets into trouble, or breaks the rules. If he thinks it was the right thing to do he’s rarely concerned with what people around him say. It’s both admirable and concerning to Dick how he has so much confident for someone so small.

Looking at the boy now, the one who has decided to pace a few steps either way, clear distress on his features, Dick doesn’t know what to make of it.

He tries to rake his brains, trying to piece together this puzzle but he’s coming up short. He slumps against the door, crossing his arms over his chest and watches the young boy clearly at an impasse of sorts.

Jason sighs heavily, and quietly rests his head on the wall in defeat.

It would be heartbreaking to watch if it wasn’t a little bit cute. The usual loud and brass twelve-year-old who is so confident, slumped against a wall with that pout on his features.

It especially sucks to know your next-door neighbors might have been psychopaths when you are, respectively, Batman and Robin.

The second the sun dips down into the horizon, Jason’s out the door without even asking where Bruce is going. He makes sure to knock on Tim’s window this time, and feels oddly like Peter Pan perched outside when Tim cracks the window open.

There’s color in his face today, and he looks more— well, alive.

“Robin,” Tim greets him quietly. “Have you made any progress?”

“Yeah. We got the bomber,” Jason says, resting one green boot on the floor of Tim’s room. Tim’s expression doesn’t change. “And—”

The words catch, but he pushes on. Point blank.

“Your parents,” Jason says, not unkindly. “What did they do to you, Tim?”

The tiny stalker glares and says, “I don’t have to! I’m not the oldest brother!”

“What?” 

“If you let me get hurt, I’m telling Batman on you!” the brat says, pointing right between Jason’s eyes.

Jason has to cross his eyes to see the pudgy finger; it makes everything go blurry. What … what is happening?! How is this his life?!

“You want me to be your brother?” Jason asks in a daze. 

“You are my brother!” the kid yells with the fierceness of a lion cub.

Tucking those feelings away to enjoy more later, Jason said, "We had to make a case for who would win in a fight between Superman and Batman."

Bruce's lips twitched. "And you don't want to go into how you've seen the entire contents of Batman's utility belt firsthand."

Jason gave him a mortified look. "You think you'd win that fight?"

Sputtering, Bruce looked at him, betrayed. "You think I wouldn't?"

Crossing his arms, Jason leaned back. "No, you wouldn't. All Superman would have to do was try to talk about emotions. And since Batman is allergic to emotions, you would either go into anaphylactic shock or flee so you didn't have to go to the hospital because of said allergies."

Lian Harper, age thirteen. She’d say she had a pretty normal life. She lived with her dad in a nice, despite it being cheap, apartment in Star City, she went to her local middle school, and she was learning archery as much as possible.

It was kind of a family tradition, as her dad was incredible, and her grandpa was even more so. Apparently. She wasn’t sure, she’d never seen an example.

Yep, completely normal life. 

Another big part of Lian’s life was one Jason Todd, also known as ‘Uncle Jay’. He and Roy were the best of friends, so he’d been around a lot as Lian grew up. He was also her dad, in a way.

She’d stayed at his Gotham apartment before quite a few times, and he had babysat her more times than she could count. Jason was a constant in her life, so when he randomly showed up at their apartment two weeks into the summer break, Lian thought nothing of it. 

This is my favorite little Lian fic. For funzies

“Oh, yes, hello,” Jason says, straightening up where he’d been stooped over to see if he could make out Lian in one of the photographs. “I’m here to pick up Lian Harper. She’s in the frog group.”

The woman standing several feet away from Jason is looking him up and down, her mouth twisting when she takes in his leather jacket and the bruise still wrapping around Jason’s eye.

“And who are you?”

“Jason Todd,” Jason answers, fighting down the urge to stand up to his full height in the face of her condescending tone — his physique has its advantages when he’s out as Red Hood, but in civilian life it often makes him seem threatening without him even trying.

“And you expect me to just hand a stranger like you a child?”

The shadow of the wolf behind the tiny toddler loses its form and it morphs into a shadow of a bird.

Jason smiles, “That’s right. You know what a robin is?”

The adorable munchkin in the yellow onesie nods, still keeping his thumb in his mouth.

The shadow of the Robin bird starts to flap its wings, flying circles around the wall.

A loud clang of something metal falling from down the hall makes both the little guy and Jason jump. The Robin shadow turns back into a wolf when Jason hears Commissioner Gordon yelling from the direction of the fallen metal. “Robin? Did you find anyone?”

Jason’s little friend is shaking with fear, and he takes his thumb out of his mouth to use both fists to cover his face.

Jason scoops up the little guy and his little fists cling onto Robin’s tunic for dear life.

Jason doesn't know how to feel. Tim does.

“Hello.” The tiny little baby sits even straighter and hops, hops! Off the bench and holds out his hand to shake. “It’s nice to meet you. I’m Timothy Drake but you can call me Tim.”

“Jason Todd.” He shakes the hand blankly.

“I know who you are Jason.” The kid is staring now, excited? Jason thinks that look is excited.

“Alright… What’re you doing over here Timothy?” He starts slowly.

His face twists into an admittedly cute little scowl before regaining its practiced cheer. “Call me Tim! Mrs. Dickerson almost tripped over me so Dad said I should find somewhere to sit and behave myself.”

His eyes grow wide and cute and-

“Why were you watching me?” He frowns.

The kid scoffs. "Says the guy who called Killer Croc a little bitch to his face last week."

"First of all, I have body armor and training, second of all, I stand by it, and third-" Now Jason lowers his binoculars, blank domino lenses zeroing in on Tim. "Hold up," he says. "How the hell do you know what I said to Croc? There was no news c-..." Tim has very subtly started edging away. "Oh my god. Kid. No. You said no more following us when we fight Rogues!"

"I didn't follow you," Tim says. "I got down into the sewer on my own."

"That's worse," Jason groans. "Who the hell knows what kind of crap might've been waiting on the route you took!"

"I can take care of myself," Tim says quietly. "I always have."

"That is not the p-..." Jason stops. "What do you mean, always have?" The kid is constantly dropping little tidbits like that, often without seeming to notice."
