"Bookmark" series Note that not all details are from the Chinese traditions, some things I tweaked for my liking or because that went better with some details in my story. Dragon 辰 5th in the cycle Their nature Yang 陽 Assigned with the element Wood 木 Current daimyou: Hishida Tatsuhiko 菱田瀧彦 Hours: 7AM-9AM Month: Sanaedzuki 早苗月 ("Month of Early Sprouts" - May) In my story people of the Dragon Clan are firce, proud and stubborn with a high spirit despite of their harsh living circumstances. Their territory lies high up in the Northern mountains with little no fields to harness. They rely much more on hunting for survival than any other clans - that probably explains their relatively bigger mass of body size as well. Since their domain touches only with the introverted Ox's they barely get in contact with the rest of the country - except for the adventurous Monkey merchants perhaps - so they are distrustful with strangers. They thought to be judgemental and often arrogant even but they can be childishly naive at the same time amazed by the wonders of the world. They value traditions but only if it complies to their needs. They throw them out the moment it is against their demands. They tend to be contradictive in many ways. Since they often hide their soft side behind misplaced pride very few know about their caring hearts. They are truely noble and self-sacrificing at their core. Their Mentor Youkai is the dragon, or so they believe... Little is known about those mythical beasts nowadays and their legends are a bit contradictory of their mentor youkai.
It's a little "bookmark" series I made sketches in... 2013 for. Note that not all details are from the Chinese traditions, some things I tweaked for my liking or because that went better with some details in my story. Rabbit 卯 4th in the cycle Their nature Yin 陰 Assigned with the element Wood 木 Current daimyou: Utonuma Udzuki 烏兎沼卯月 Hours: 5AM-7AM Month: Udzuki 卯月 ("Month of the Deutzia" - April) In my story people of the Rabbit Clan are gentle, serene and modest with a deep desire for peace, harmony and beauty. What people not know about them is that they are also clever and cunning, their obedience and willingness to surronder is not because of cowardice but of convinience and wisdom. They know more than any other when to hide and when to fight. Many underestimates them for their peaceful nature and Rabbits use it to their advantage. Though they are hospitable with strangers they keep their distance and only truely loving with those who are close to them. Family is the most important for them but they are smart enough to care for their surrondings too because they know it will benefit them on the long term. One of the few clans where aristocrats make sure their people are satisfied and well-fed so they will serve them with grateful obedience. Throughout the warring ages they were the only clan who could preserve their prosperity. Their Mentor Youkai is the zenko, the spirit fox. Zenkou is thought to bring good fortune and abundance if treated well since they are said to be messengers of Inari, the goddess of rice and harvests.
It's a little "bookmark" series I made sketches in... 2012 for. (Also I have another plan with them when all is done) Note that not all details are from the Chinese traditions, some things I tweaked for my liking or because that went better with some details in my story. Ox 丑 2nd in the cycle Their nature Yin 陰 Assigned with the element Water 水 Current daimyou: Ikido Ushigorou 生土牛五郎 Hours: 1AM-3AM Month: Kisaragi 如月 ("Month of the Changing Clothes" - February) In my story people of the Ox Clan are serious, guarded and hard on the outside so they may seem cold but they are honest and very caring of those who they like. They are hard workers and expect others to respect them for it. Harsh living circumstances up in the mountains thaught them to the value of teamwork. Often hot-headed when young, doing crazy things for challenge, rebel against authority but usually calm down with age (unlike Monkey or Horse people XP). They are just as dutiful as Dogs and as prideful as Dragons (if not more). Their Mentor Youkai is the tengu. Though people haven't seen them in ages they still live vividly in their legends. It's said that they were the one who thaught them to the magical swordsmith that is their special power. They are able to create swords that can either bring luck to the weilder or curse them - depending on the intention of the blacksmith.
There, finished it at last!
Above you can see the awesome help I got from Heiros, starting with my boring, flat image, going on with her variations focused on dynamism and contrast. *_* HAPPY NEW YEAR, guys! It started on 8th according to the Lunar calendar. Expect sudden - often dramatic - changes for Monkey wouldn't settle with boredom and with the element Fire rough power, hastiness, vital energy, but sometimes destructive forces too are in motion. Enkou, the Monkey daimyou is probably a perfect personification of it (though she is actually very level headed in case of emergency). XD I heard you are supposed to be extra careful with your temper and health. XP My year started out accordingly, btw. A rather rough fight on the 1st day of the Lunar New Year resulted in me deciding to move away, so now looking for a rent. It's gonna be a new start for me, heh heh. My goal for this year on a personal level is to be... flexibile, more laid-back, more playful but fierce and tough. But also learn the concept of "proper rest". Enkou shall be my role-model~
w.i.p.
But YAY I’m muuuuch happier with it so far! A friend gave me super-useful tips and even made variations to guide me! ;u;
There, have a blissful Year of the Fire Monkey! =D I know it looks unbalanced, it’s on purpose.

I wasn’t going to do commissions... But it was for a friend’s friend, it was supposed to be easy (originally they said a pencil sketch will be fine) and, you see, “simple style” + “Chinese Zodiac” + “kung-fu pose & outfit” together was just REALLY tempting... >,<
At first I wanted to do it in the Age of Phoenix style but the point for it was to make all the people recognizable so eye colour and big eyes helps. Hence it kinda turned as a chibi-manga style.
