New Year New Me

Anyway, this blog is shadowbanned, and as usual tumblr staff isn't helping so I decided to just remake with a new url. The queue here is running untagged for a bit but from here on out, I'll be posting from @cosmiccowboycomics, which hopefully reflects my interests a bit more than my current URL.

See y'all there!

I've made a list like this before, but the blog I made it on got shadowbanned or something and none of my original posts are showing in the tags.

Matt Hawk/Matt Leibowicz is a gunslinger from 1873 who is also a defense lawyer. He's best known for his gay little situationship with Hawkeye/Clint Barton, but he's an interesting, fascinating, layered character in his own right.

This list, specifically, is aimed at people who just want to know what to read if they want to know more about Matt. My other list examines every single appearance of Matt's, while this one will only list issues I considered at least decent or are essential to understand his history. (accounting for period-typical nonsense). This list doesn't include content warnings, and some of the issues I list here go into some heavy topics, so if you need content warnings, check out my more in depth list here (x)

Issues marked with * are issues that are bare-bones necessary to understand his basic history, ! marks my personal favorites. Italicized entries are one where Matt only appears in a couple pages.

This list is in roughly chronological order.

!*Two-Gun Kid #60-62 (Kirby-Lee run)

Two-Gun Kid #63-64, 65D, 68,69

Rawhide Kid #40

Two-Gun Kid #70-71, 73-74, 76

[ID: Graphic reading "Fourth World Read-Through" Metropolis to the X-Pit (and everywhere in between!) One INCREDIBLE issue every week! Discussion of Kirby's Far-Out Saga begins February 6th, 2024! End ID]

Epilogue

"There came a time when the Old Gods died! The brave died with the cunning! The noble perished, locked in battle with unleashed evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!"

And so begins The New Gods, the chronicle of the epic battle between the New Gods of New Genesis and the evil Darkseid of Apokalips, who aims to subjugate all free will in the universe. Written, illustrated and edited by Jack "The King" Kirby, the Fourth World spanned four titles from 1970 through 1972-

  • The New Gods- Tells of the champion of the New Gods, as he fights to protect Earth from Darkseid's evil
  • Mister Miracle- Tells of a fugitive from Apokalips and his attempt to build a life for himself on Earth
  • The Forever People- Tells of a group of young New Gods who seek to save a friend kidnapped by Darkseid
  • Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen- Tells of how a young human and his friend, a mighty Earth warrior, are caught up in the conflict.

Sadly, due to factors that are unclear to this day, three of the four titles were cancelled abruptly, with the fourth following not too long thereafter. This means that Kirby's Fourth World Saga, masterpiece though it is, remains uncompleted. Since then, the characters and concepts introduced in the Fourth World have spread through the DCU, leaving a deep, distinct influence on the wider DCU canon in ways that cannot be overstated.

Hosted by myself, @upagainstthesunset and @fruitkingfrog on a Discord server, this read-through aims to take a deeper look at the original 52 issues of Kirby's 1970s run, one issue a week in the order they were released for a year. We aim to be accessible to die-hard fans who are well familiar with the story, but particularly to first-time readers of Kirby's saga- or to comics as a whole!

Fact: The earliest reliably dated use of the phrase “fucked up” appears in the court records of a US Navy court-martial case from 1863; the way the phrase is used suggests that its meaning was already well known at the time, but this is the first known printed record of it that we can confidently put a date to.

Additional fact: Bram Stoker’s Dracula is set in 1897.

Conclusion: It would not anachronistic for your Dracula fanfic to have a character describe the Count as a fucked up old man.

aight, SO

this blog isn't completely dead. I'm going to use it as a place to store posts for later reference, and I'll probably go through and organize the tags here at a later date.

but all my original posts are going on @cosmiccowboycomics since they actually show up in the tags
