I adopted a stray cat today. It’s a monkey slug cat and the name is pending but for now we’ve been calling it Billy Joel
Caterpillar falls off edge while I say “oh” in slow motion.
Tim Wong, a microbiologist who works at the California Academy of Sciences, single-handedly repopulated an entire species of butterfly in his backyard.
Wong decided to build a greenhouse dedicated to creating a safe haven for California’s pipevine swallowtail butterfly population, which were hovering near the brink of extinction. Thanks to the ideal conditions that he created - the sunlight, cool breeze, favorable temperature fluctuations, and seeding the greenhouse full of California pipevine, the only flower that these insects eat - the previously endangered population is now thriving.
anyway i went through the park to buy lizard food and i found 22 woolly bear caterpillars
I was looking up the etymology of “caterpillar” and long story short a bunch of languages basically just named them after other animals (ex. cats, dogs, bears). As you would expect, these are all furry critters, which describes fluffy caterpillars quite nicely... except for Portuguese, which names them after lizards.
A couple of bugs from my recent trip to the Rachel Carson Conservation Park. ID help would be appreciated! (I think the first is an aberrant Pyrrharctia isabella but I'm not totally sure. No idea on the second.) Both were found among a grassy field in central Maryland in the first week of September.
