An Ocean Lover

That’s how a jellyfish swims. It sucks water by expanding its bell shaped body. As the body expands, a low pressure zone is created just under it. Water rushes in to fill that low pressure zone and the force propels the jellyfish in the ocean. It is the most energy efficient way of swimming. That method is much better than our submarines or  ships. Even a flying machine can be built by using that method that will be far more efficient than a helicopter.

Jellyfish Blooms

Sometimes thousands of jellyfishes are concentrated around a small area of the ocean. Such a swarm is known as a “bloom”.

The blooms are a combined result of many factors like - ocean current, air flow, season, water temperature, sunshine, concentration of oxygen, concentration of plankton etc.

If the water becomes warmer it helps the jellyfish population to grow. Lack of oxygen in the sea water is surprisingly led to growth also. Poor oxygen concentration drives away fishes and other plankton eaters from a certain area of the ocean. As a result, the jellies (as they can survive without much oxygen) can have more food to sustain a larger population.

Agriculture needs fertilizers to grow more crops. Increase of fertilizers mean increment of nutrients to water which ultimately comes into the ocean. Jellyfish flourish in such waters.

Big blooms can be bad for fishing and other sea related  commercial activities. Such a bloom can also alter the ecosystem of a part of the ocean.

Wonderful Comb Jellies

Comb jellies or ctenophora are marine invertebrates that looks like jellyfishes and swims using their combs or large cilia. They are the largest animals who use cilia for locomotion.

Comb jellies are bioluminent. They can produce light.

The above photo shows a comb jelly that belongs to the baroe family. Look at the “combs” of the creature. These are cilia.

It’s a blood belly comb jelly.

This comb jelly is known as sea gooseberry. Why? Look at the photo below to know:

Comb jellies does not have a brain or central nervous system just like a jellyfish.

Comb jellies are voracious eaters. They eat zooplankton. Here is a antarctic ocean ctenophore is eating a krill.
