I just realized that apparently I never shared this series here on Tumblr??

I call it Living Paintings, as they are recreations of extinct animals that some artists actually saw and painted from memory, a long time ago.

Recent updates to this series: Glyptodon and Thylacine!

OK SO a frozen baby Homotherium mummy has been found in Siberian permafrost and everybody is going nuts (including me). I had to make another installmente for this series with a figurine that has long been debated to either depict either a lion or Homotherium; Despite anatomical details pointing to the latter, there was no record of surviving Homotherium from the time the figurine was dated to have been made, so it was mostly believed to have been a cave lion. However, the frozen cub closes that temporal gap and makes it more likely that this was in fact the subject of the sculpture. So even though it’s not a painting, here it is brought to life.

my problem as a writer and as a roleplayer is that I always want characters to do that thing where you hold your hand out, palm to the ground, and kind of tilt it quickly left and right to express uncertainty or a "kinda-sorta"/"yes and no" vibe. but I don't know an official term for this so I always just call it the Noncommittal Hand Waggle

somebody appears to have responded to this post... via the contact form on bandcamp, using the burner email "[email protected]"

It is the sign of the scales. The scales have not settled and they waggle back and forth. Like this like that.

and you know what. I never thought about that before but it's probably right. why the fuck would you tell me this via the bandcamp contact form of all things, and why would you phrase it like you're writing an esoteric treatise encoded via metaphor

Droproll Floodarch – Gargantuan elemental, unaligned

Civilization is a curious sort of growth that accumulates around large bodies of water, sustained by the water‘s bounty and constrained by its whims. Those who fancy themselves masters of the water, however, must eventually reckon with the following truth; the water does not need them, and neither steel, nor stone, nor force of arms can stand against the water‘s will once woken.

This one was made in collaboration with the wonderful Conflux Creatures!

Mossy mushroomy A-frame cabin commission, with its little pals

I got no photos of my favorite design decision: ceramic "rafters" supporting the needlefelted moss. They'll get their time to shine whenever the felt biodegrades, which will be a while.

In a monumental discovery for paleontology and the first of its kind "Mummy of a juvenile sabre-toothed cat Homotherium latidens from the Upper Pleistocene of Siberia"

Abstract The frozen mummy of the large felid cub was found in the Upper Pleistocene permafrost on the Badyarikha River (Indigirka River basin) in the northeast of Yakutia, Russia. The study of the specimen appearance showed its significant differences from a modern lion cub of similar age (three weeks) in the unusual shape of the muzzle with a large mouth opening and small ears, the very massive neck region, the elongated forelimbs, and the dark coat color. Tomographic analysis of the mummy skull revealed the features characteristic of Machairodontinae and of the genus Homotherium. For the first time in the history of paleontology, the appearance of an extinct mammal that has no analogues in the modern fauna has been studied. If you have achieved something, please remember to observe a mandatory period of basking in the warm glow of your achievement like a lizard on a stone, lest you teach your brain that effort is futile, actually, because it didn't get to enjoy its happy chemicals, so, naturally, nothing good ever comes of trying. (And no, avoiding punishment is not a reward!)

I recommend, like, 5% of basking time in relation to whatever time you invested into achieving the thing minimum. And if you can't make your own bask, friend-brought is fine (= tell your friends!).

This distinctively warty lichen is Melanohalea exasperata (with several friends) on a lushly populated oak twig.

It can be tricky to find as it mostly grows high up in the tree canopy - so far I've only enountered it on branches that have recently fallen to the ground.

Have you ever seen a Spruce Grouse (Canachites canadensis)? Known for their tameness around humans, these birds inhabit a wide range across North America’s forests including parts of Canada and the United States. Vibrantly-colored males use their plumage in courtship displays: They can snap their tail feathers open with a whooshing sound, swish from side to side, and “dance” to attract the attention of mates.
