Hey ya'll should listen to Twinkle Park :)
Something I haven't seen anyone else talk about yet which kinda bums me out is how the fruits and vegetables in pikmin 4 look so FUCKING good. I found a zucchini last night and my god I wanted to eat it so bad.
This is literally the epitome of graphics.
Gonna be a nerd about this for a sec
Yeah these look so fucking good and also!!! The switch sucks graphically (by the standards of others on the market) what youre seeing here is masterful texture work.
Roughness/Specular textures to determine what areas shine and what areas have a more matte appearance.
Normal maps to give the illusion of a more detailed surface while using less geometry.
AND what appears to be subsurface scattering! Thats what gives that soft glow of the light scattering through into the mesh.
Im sure theres much more going on here but from a technical standpoint Nintendo have had to do some clever trickery and stylisations to make the models look so crisp. Thats not to mention the beautiful use of light and shadows and scale across the entirety of the game. They really put their all into pushing these graphics to their limit.
For reference heres a video on how the models were done in Pikmin 3:
Gonna keep working on this rig but threw this together in a couple of hours!
If yall have any interest in learning more complex rigs check out Pierrick Picauts tutorial on YouTube (free rig too)
P2Design seems like a brilliant resource for all levels of animators (even complete beginners, go for it!)
I'm starting to think that these works are art because they require such stories to be told about them, setting aside anything else
If yall haven't seen it this video by Jacob Geller goes into more depth of the motives and ideologies behind slashing the painting
