Sacramento SPCA turns its back on farmed animals.

Let's show the Sacramento SPCA why an animal-friendly menu policy is awesome.

Post a photo of your companion chicken, goat, cow, sheep, goat, dog, cat, rabbit— any animal, really— to your FB timeline and TAG the shelter (@Sacramento_SPCA). Or post to their timeline. Ask them to stop serving the bodies of the animals you love to benefit dogs and cats in the shelter.

Background: The Sacramento SPCA maintained a meat-free menu policy for their shelter events for years, until new CEO Kenn Altine reversed the progressive policy...making Sac SPCA the first shelter in the nation to do so. Ouch!

Here's Shelby giving side-eye.

Hosted by The Humane Society of United States, Animal Place interns spent time advocating on behalf of elephants at the annual Humane Lobby Day in Sacramento, CA. Interns and supporters lobbied in favor of AB96 which bans the sale and purchase of elephant and rhino ivory in California.  Good job interns, you’re making a difference!

Ghandi once said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” The Sacramento based Vegetarian Club student group from Mira Loma high school are taking this to heart! This compassionate group raised $161 from their student run bake sale (which was matched by an anonymous donor!!!) for the farmed animal residents at the sanctuary. Both the staff and bovine Douglas were incredibly inspired by these remarkable young adults! Way to put your compassion into action for farmed animals!

Check out Animal Place’s Brave the Cage campaign, which asks the public to see what life is like for 95% of hens on egg farms by stepping inside a human-sized battery cage. We’ve taken this campaign to places like the State Capitol in Sacramento and the University of California, Berkeley. See how passersby respond after stepping inside the cage.

Do you think your area has what it takes to brave the cage? Where do you think we should take the cage next?

Thanks World of Vegan for making this incredible video!

We had an amazing day of outreach at the Sacramento Earth Day Celebration! Not only did we collect over 200 signatures encouraging California Governor Jerry Brown to place tighter water restrictions on animal agriculture, many want to visit the sanctuary and meet the farmed animal ambassadors that call the sanctuary home.

A big thank you to our amazing intern and volunteers for all your help at the event! We couldn’t have done it without you!

Meet one of the two newest (temporary) residents! This little lady and her mom were rescued from the streets of Sacramento by Front Street Animal Shelter - City of Sacramento. They are staying at our adoption center for six weeks, then heading out to their permanent home at Preetirang Sanctuary! The two are called Boer goats and were likely being raised for slaughter. 75% of all goats being raised in the US are raised for slaughter. Of those, 60% are Boer goats like these two. More than 3 million goats are used in the United States for their flesh, milk, hair/fiber, in research, and for brush clearing. Approximately 1.5 million are slaughtered annually. California is one of the top five states killing goats and one of the top two exploiting goats for their milk. Like in the bovine dairy industry, male kids are unwanted and sent to auction or slaughter.

A big thank you to all that attended our first Brave the Cage Challenge, especially our volunteers! Friday’s event was a success with three media stations covering the exhibition and around 100 visitors! The challenge highlighted the egregious conditions hens on egg farms are confined to for their short lives. Those who braved the cage took the Egg-Free Pledge, , enjoyed delicious vegan food samples, and received information regarding the egg industry. All in all, we had many folks walk away making the connection and pledging to make a difference in their daily lives!

Our next Brave the Cage challenge will take place next Saturday, March 28 from 12 - 3 at the Lake Merritt Amphitheater in Oakland, CA. If you’re in the Bay Area next week, make sure to stop by and BRAVE THE CAGE!

Help Bob find a new home! Bob is a Polish Crested rooster currently residing at Sacramento County Animal Care...but he and a couple of his rooster buddies would love to find forever homes. There is also a Rhode Island Red and Ameraucana rooster in need of homes. About Bob A650925 Bob is a handsome boy as you can see. He can be a bit feisty, but, when he sees treats of meal-worms or oatmeal he settles right in to "cluck" mode. Maybe he would rather be called Robert?? He is quite a character and a stand out to boot with his crazy feathers on top. Bob is waiting for his forever home and you can find him in the shelter's barn. To adopt, call the shelter at 916-368-7387
