Cage-free hens? How about egg-free humans?

“...[A]s the Wall Street Journal’s David Kesmodel reported earlier this year, cage-free hens are subject to poorer air quality, more pecking of each other and cannibalism. So they still have to be de-beaked, a process in which a hot knife slices through the bone and tissue of a chick’s beak.”

508 hens have been liberated from a free-range farm exploiting hens for egg production, but there is still a lot of work to be done at our rescue and adoption facility in Vacaville, CA. Half of these hens have respiratory illness, with a dozen suffering severely swollen sinuses. There were no roosters at this farm - all of Rosie’s brothers were killed at the hatchery the day they were born. We still need your help! Apply to volunteer or adopt some of these lucky hens...they won’t be available until completely healthy but now is a great time to apply. www.henrescuers.org

Don’t be fooled by the labels, “humane” slaughter does not exist. Time and time again, undercover investigations show that certification means nothing. And, at the end of the day, animals on “humane” farms often end up at the same slaughterhouses as animals from conventional farms. Other animals want to live and since we can choose to cause less harm by keeping animal flesh off the plate...why wouldn’t we?

A DxE team investigates one of the largest players in “humane” animal farming. What they found will shock you. Check back next week when we release the full video, unmask a huge multinational corporation as a violent fraud, and tell the stories of two animals – Mei Hua and Sephy -- rescued from a life of terror and pain. https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=873933519303665

Day 13 of Turkey Talk - Diseased and Drugged: The Modern Turkey

Like all beings with wills to live freely and enjoy their lives, turkeys do not do well in confinement. They are subject to confinement on virtually all farms, even so-called “free-range”, “cage-free”, and “organic” farms. The result of cramming hundreds, sometimes thousands of birds in a crowded yard or barn is an array of health problems. Sitting and standing in filthy litter, breathing ammonia and dust, they develop blistered and diseased feet and breasts, burned eyes and respiratory diseases. To control the variety of diseases that develop in these harsh conditions, farmers may feed birds subtherapeutic levels of antibiotics or antimicrobials.
