Excluding organic operations, the term “free-range” means little for the chickens. Regulatory agencies vaguely define the term in such a way that chickens can spend most of their lives indoors in overcrowded conditions and their flesh or eggs may be labeled “free-range.” No matter the label, exploiting and ending the lives of other animals is unjust.
