The meat industry has caused the largest dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico. Eating animals directly contributes to immense environmental degradation, toxic pollution, and species extinction. Go vegan to take a stand for the planet and all its inhabitants.

Is Organic Really Better for the Animals?

Of the 25,000 hens Animal Place has saved from death, the birds who have been the sickest originated from organic farms.

Organic does not mean better for the birds...it can, in fact, be worse for the birds’ health.

Cruelty is inherent to all forms of farming. Help hens, keep eggs off the menu.

Come Learn About the Intersections of Animal & Human Rights!

We are excited to have Dr. Linda Alvarez, co-founder of Vegan Advocacy Initiative—formerly Coalition of Vegan Activists of Color—speaking at our Farmed Animal Conference this June in Grass Valley, California! She will be discussing the systemic violence against both nonhumans and humans in the animal agriculture industry. Join her at our conference to learn why animal rights must be part of the food justice and environmental justice movements in order to create more sustainable and fair systems.

“Free range sheds can contain up to nine birds per square metre – that’s like 14 adults living in a one-room flat.”

Yes, this article was written for a UK audience. Yes, the exact same thing is true in the United States. No, eggs you purchase in the store do not come from your neighbor’s two hens.

California signed into law a bill that requires animal farmers to stop using medically important antimicrobials (including antibiotics) to promote growth (e.g. subtherapeutically).

Sadly farmers rarely use antibiotics the way they are intended. For example, the farm we rescued 507 hens and 1 rooster from two weeks ago were never treated for their respiratory illness with antibiotics, which they should have been (and which we are doing now). The remaining 5,000 chickens at the farm are likely still ill, but because the farm is organic, they will not treat with sick birds with antibiotics.

Ever wonder what it’s like to be an undercover investigator inside some of the nation’s largest commercial farms? Animal Place interviewed TJ Tumasse, former investigator and current manager of investigations at Animal Legal Defense Fund, to discuss his work.

Don’t be fooled by the labels, “humane” slaughter does not exist. Time and time again, undercover investigations show that certification means nothing. And, at the end of the day, animals on “humane” farms often end up at the same slaughterhouses as animals from conventional farms. Other animals want to live and since we can choose to cause less harm by keeping animal flesh off the plate...why wouldn’t we?

Did you know 80% of antibiotics - including many used for treating important infections in humans - are fed to healthy animals? Farmers add antibiotics to animals’ feed to compensate for keeping them in crowded, unsanitary conditions. The antibiotics are added at a level that does not treat disease but improves growth. The overuse of antibiotics on farms contributes to antibiotic-resistant bacteria (superbugs). Over two million Americans suffer from an antibiotic-resistant infection every year, and 23,000 people die. The FDA has known about the problem of antibiotics misuse since at least 1977, but has not required farmers to stop this dangerous practice.

Urgent! Please share and speak out for those whose voices are being ignored!

North Carolina legislature has passed devastating Ag Gag Bill HB405, which seeks to leave the unimaginable and egregious acts of cruelty to farmed animals hidden and keep consumers in the dark about cruel animal farming.

Only North Carolina Governor McCrory can stop the bill now. Please call 919-814-2000 and demand him to veto HB 405! Not a North Carolina resident? Call 1-800-847-4862 to say you will not visit the state of North Carolina if this bill banning animal cruelty investigations becomes law.

Attention! Wyoming governor signs ‘ag gag’ bill to hide the disgusting and horrific truth behind the animal agriculture industry. What does this mean?

In states where ag gag laws exist, this legislature makes it illegal to document food safety and animal welfare violations. Any whistleblower, journalist, or activist caught exposing abusive farming practices could be prosecuted. It criminalizes your right to know the truth about who your food comes from.

You’ve got to ask yourself what animal ag doesn’t want you to see.

Is drinking milk natural or utterly disgusting?

One of the main arguments for eating animals and their byproducts is that’s it’s “natural.” There’s nothing natural about the dairy industry. In order for a cow to produce milk, she must give birth - meaning she is forcibly impregnated over and over again until she is spent and ultimately sent to a painful, cruel slaughter. Most dairy farms remove calves from their moms right after birth. If the calf is female, she will be raised to replace her mom who is slaughtered at 4-7 years of age. Cows can live into their late teens. If the mother gives birth to a male, he will be raised for veal or cheap dairy beef. If he is raised for veal, he will be slaughtered at 16-24 weeks of age. If he is being killed for “cheap dairy beef”, he will only be 15-18 months old.
