Animal Place

Awesome farmed animal sanctuary home to 300 formerly neglected and abused cows, pigs, chickens, sheep, goats, rabbits and turkeys in Grass Valley, CA. Perfect place to visit, volunteer, and intern!

Before she came to Animal Place, Holly was raised for her flesh by a backyard butcher. Many visitors of the sanctuary are surprised to learn that not only are rabbits used for their flesh, but rabbit consumption in the US is on the rise, due to the perception of rabbit meat as “healthy” and “sustainable.”

Thankfully, Animal Control confiscated Holly, and she was brought to Animal Place, where she is loved and respected for who she is: a sensitive and independent individual.

Come meet Holly and feed her carrot tops on a guided tour!

Beatrix was abandoned at the San Francisco Animal Control shelter with another rabbit, Ingrid. While another rescue offered to take in Beatrix and Ingrid, they returned them to animal control due to the scared rabbits’ tendency to pee every time someone entered the adoption room.

For a year, animal control tried to find a good home for both bunnies, but no one was interested. Instead of euthanizing Beatrix and Ingrid, the shelter reached out to rescues and, luckily, we had room!

They came to Animal Place this past April, along with two bunnies the shelter rescued from a hoarder. They’ve been warming up to humans since then and love eating herbs out of visitors’ hands.

Recognizing the inherent worth of every living being with whom we share this planet is beautiful and transformative. We all want to live autonomously and free of suffering. Our subsequent extension of our circle of compassion to include nonhuman animals and our refusal to contribute to their exploitation is not an inconvenience or burden, but rather a chance to align our daily actions with our deepest values.

Sacramento SPCA turns its back on farmed animals.

Let's show the Sacramento SPCA why an animal-friendly menu policy is awesome.

Post a photo of your companion chicken, goat, cow, sheep, goat, dog, cat, rabbit— any animal, really— to your FB timeline and TAG the shelter (@Sacramento_SPCA). Or post to their timeline. Ask them to stop serving the bodies of the animals you love to benefit dogs and cats in the shelter.

Background: The Sacramento SPCA maintained a meat-free menu policy for their shelter events for years, until new CEO Kenn Altine reversed the progressive policy...making Sac SPCA the first shelter in the nation to do so. Ouch!

Here's Shelby giving side-eye.

This beautiful girl was going to be killed because - after having her beak mutilated, seeing her brothers die, spending 2-years in a cage so small she could not spread her wings in a room that reeked of ammonia from 24-months of urine and feces - she was not laying enough eggs to be considered valuable.

She is safe now in a home that knows her value cannot be measured in dollars. Save others from the cruelty she endured. Leave the eggs to the hens. Go vegan.
