The thing that really gets me about Mount Rushmore is that even if the Lakota, and the other tribes that Sox Grandfathers is sacred to, get their rights to the Black Hills back, how do they fix that? Those faces are literally CARVED INTO the mountain, so the choice is to leave them (preserving the legacy of genocidal colonizers) or trying to carve them out and risking causing even more harm.

There is no good solution. That mountain, all of the Black Hills, have been permanently altered by white supremacists, which can't even be denied considering that the first lead sculptor was involved with the KKK and the second sculptor was his son.

Mount Rushmore is probably one of the most blatant and visible disregards for Native peoples, one of the most violent symbols of stolen land physically possible. It's disgusting.

This post wasn't about looking for "solutions" to this problem, it was about the ways that colonialism has left a permanent scar on our lands and that there are some things that cannot be reversed.

We can bring back plants and animals, we can bring back lost bodies of water, we can even revive destroyed ecosystems (though the prairie revival efforts are an incredible challenge that no one was about to predict), but we can't put back the pieces literally carved out of our land. We can't return stolen ore and oil back to the hollowed out portions of the earth. We can't bring back the parts of our planet that took millions of years just to develop only to be ripped apart like they were nothing.

There's no easy solutions to this. Covering Mount Rushmore up with plants or paint or whatever else won't heal Six Grandfathers. Hiding the carvings with artificial rock to mimic a natural mountain face won't either. Carving the faces out will only cause further damage.

(And regardless, what happens to the Black Hills should be up to the Lakota and other tribes that call those mountains home and no one else.)

And that's just Mount Rushmore. There's so many less well known scars just like it, not as aesthetically "pleasing" but with the same fundamental effects, gaping wounds in the earth that were created when our home was ripped apart for ore and oil.

Time heals all wounds, but that doesn't mean that it won't leave scars. Given enough time, erosion can smooth the edges and hide the raggedness of those scars, destroy the faces of colonizers and oppressors carved into the earth, but it can't bring back everything that's been lost.

This is. Something that is incredibly difficult to talk about, but it's also a reality that we need to face if we truly want full decolonization and sovereignty. Our homes have been forever changed and we need to let ourselves grieve what's been lost (what we never had the chance to know) so that we can move forward.
