The King and the Merchant’s Daughter AU: fire-spirit Rose, the daughter of a wealthy inventor, is invited to the new King’s coronation. She’s not used to bowing to any man, be it a King or her Father, and the whole stay at the palace is a far cry from the freedom the life in the outside the court allows. While she takes an instant dislike to the King, the King himself is fascinated with the courageous Merchant’s daughter.

The Doctor doesn’t want, and really doesn’t need, to travel with a yes person. At this point in his lives, I think it would actively hurt him to travel with some awestruck young thing who put him on a pedestal. He needs his friends to trust and believe in him, but he also needs them to keep him grounded. He appreciates people who don’t blindly follow authority. That’s a sign of an active, open mind. Feisty people who buck authority are fun, even if it’s sometimes his authority. The Doctor well knows that stubbornness can be a virtue.

Besides, I think he just likes a bossy Rose.
