An Every Day Thing

@aneverydaything / aneverydaything.tumblr.com

This tumblr is a challenge to observe more and take a new photograph every day, randomly commencing on 24 June 2018. The photographs are not intended to be autobiographical. For many years they had no titles or comments (other than a day and a date) and were intended to speak for themselves. However in an effort to make each daily photograph more interesting, I am experimenting with a comment or title. Visit moreeverydaythings.tumblr.com/ to find out more about a particular day. Day 2095, 18 March 2024

Rubbish! Somehow I managed to forget to take my photo of the day for 18 March. Because I knew I'd have to take it later in the day, I even put a reminder in my phone so I wouldn't miss it. So much for my organisational skills!

It is though a good opportunity to say thank you for following me and if you enjoy An Every Day Thing, you can also find my photographs on my following Tumblrs:

Postcards from Wanderings which was where it all started but is now focused on general travel other than London and Cornwall

Sometimes London which showcases the London which visitors like;

London Edge for the more genuine, authentic and gritty London;

My Cornish Place for Cornwall (not that I get back there much or for very long these days);

My Monochrome Place for a world in black and white;

More Every Day Things where you can find additional photographs from a particular day but which do not fall into the theme of one of my other Tumblrs. Unlike An Every Day Thing which carries no description, More Every Day Things contains some description about and even some stories behind the photographs.

Sports Spectator for sport at all levels from a spectator perspective (but sadly not enough time for sports spectating these days);

Small Town XTC which celebrates the uniqueness and reflects on some of the dispiritedness of small town Great Britain (currently in need of some TLC so really less of the XTC happening on this Tumblr these days):

My Colourful Place which is meant to contain lots of colour. Unfortunately this Tumblr has been neglected for an age so I’m hoping to shame myself into re-invigorating it; and

English Shops for well errrr…English shops

You can also follow me on InstagramFacebook and Twitter and find me at my website photographmelondon.com.

COVID-19

It is vital that going forward we all do our bit, however small, to slow down the spread of COVID-9 and help our NHS. The photo for Day 639, 23 March 2020 was taken shortly after the Government announced the introduction of new measures to stay at home except for limited purposes. AnEveryDayThing will, of course, be complying with such measures. As a consequence, and as previously stated, until the measures are relaxed, each daily photo on AnEveryDayThing will be taken from home (expect lots of close-ups of knives, forks and spoons!) or perhaps on an essential food shop.

I will continue to post to my other tumblrs during this period at home including:

However, all photos will come from my archives during this period.

On a positive front, the extra time at home will provide an opportunity to resurrect some of my much neglected tumblrs including:

I’ve even got ideas for other themed tumblrs so more to follow!

AnEveryDayThing, a hotel car park and COVID-19

Shortly before 8am, I took the photo for day 633, a close-up of a bush in a hotel car park  in Warwickshire, England. Over the prior 632 days I’ve been fortunate to live in, work in and visit a number of different places so inspiration for photo of the day has never been a problem. By the end of day 633, like millions of others I was social distancing at home where I’m going to be for the foreseeable future.

What to do with AnEveryDayThing therefore? I’ve thought about stopping but we cannot just stop everything. We must maintain some sort of normality. I’ve thought about turning into something more autobiographical but I always said that was not its point. I thought about making more documental. Life in lockdown but that felt too depressing. I therefore concluded to continue. It’s going to be even more of a challenge now: to find something every day, both different and inspiring, a short radius from where I live or indeed, going forward, quite possibly from inside where I live. Plus a shout-out to any follower who can work out my exact location!
