Beauty in the apertures of pain

I want to say Without temper If possible without the least sense of the heroic Without even the measured ambition to speak the truth which is only another vulgarity To say I am not what I was Indeed I was nothing and now I am at least the possibility of something and this I will defend.

In Your Dreams (1955), a portrait of Jean Rayner, 14, from west London, who ‘had attitude by the truckload’. Photograph: Ken Russell.

Related: This brilliant badass, oft forgotten, ‘female’ subculture from the 1950s, The Teddy Girls, of which Jean was a member. It's a shame that The Teddy Boys are commonly known yet their girl counterparts are obscured (not that I'm surprised at this erasure).

Let us simmer over our incalculable cauldron, our enthralling confusion, our hotchpotch of impulses, our perpetual miracle - for the soul throws up wonders every second. Movement and change are the essence of our being; rigidity is death; conformity is death; let us say what comes into our heads, repeat ourselves, contradict ourselves, fling out the wildest nonsense, and follow the most fantastic fancies without caring what the world does or thinks or says. For nothing matters except life.
