“I said something about the Machiavelli play within the novel called Mandragola, pronouncing it so. Vivien threw in a quick correction, ‘Mandrágolá’. Of course, it was silly of me to be irritated. There is no reason why she should not correct me if I am wrong, but the correction came at what I felt the wrong moment. I was trying to build the narrative, and it seemed to me petty for her to interrupt me in that way. So, I simply repeated, the next time the word came up, ‘Mandragola’. Again, she said ‘Mandrágolá’’. I stopped and said, ‘What’s the difference, for Christ’s sake?’ ‘All the difference in the world,’ she replied cooly. ‘You’re pronouncing it incorrectly.’ ‘That’s how we say it here,’ I ventured. ‘Where?’ ‘In the United States, where we happen to be,’ I said. ‘Oh, do you?’ said Vivien. ‘Well, in the United States you pronounce it incorrectly.’” Mr. Garson Kanin recalling a little spat he had once with Vivien.
