Grant didn’t want to do the film, claiming that he didn’t understand the character. Hawks said, “You’ve seen Harold Lloyd, haven’t you?” and counseled him to play the role in the manner of the noted silentscreen clown as a total innocent caught up in insane events. He even gave the character Harold Lloyd’s trademark small, round glasses.
