Letter from F. Scott Fitzgerald to Edmund Wilson (via caitlynreadsbooks)
“He wanted to recover something, some idea of himself perhaps, that had gone into loving Daisy. His life had been confused and disordered since then, but if he could once return to a certain starting place and go over it all slowly, he could find out what that thing was.” —F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby

So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.
“Tom has feelings. He has feelings about being threatened as an alpha male; that Gatsby might actually come and poach his wife, whether he loves Daisy or not. That’s a fucking awkward position when you are the king of your universe.”

With Vacant Eyes
She went on falling, falling, falling,
She saw many wondrous things pass her eyes
Then out of the darkness his face was there,
Whispering sweet nothings.
She closed her eyes hoping not to see,
But her imagination got the better,
She looked with vacant eyes.
The dresses and suits that span past her,
Blurred in the semidarkness,
Laughter and emotion filled the air,
Surrounding her in the room.
She called out for help and reached out her hand,
Graceful and poised she was lifted like a dying fairy
From the flurry of the dance floor,
To the silence of the street,
Still the lights shone brightly,
Almost blinding under the deep blue sky,
She cried for help but the party continued,
Ignoring her pleas.
Downing another glass of the gin sling,
She regains her stance and glides
Like a swan to him,
She falls once more into the arms of drink.
Obsessed with this book. Watercolors…again haha.
…the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us.
