the reason so many attempts to adapt the beauty and the beast following the hugely formative disney version have kinda sucked i think is because writers fail to account for these two simple rules:
1. the beauty character should get to actually be rightfully angry about her situation at first. if you arent giving your beauty the narrative space to be petty and pissed off youve failed and even worse you have bored me.
2. the beast needs to be a bit of a malewife. non negotiable.
monsterfucker society has become so enamored with “powerful scary monster who rejects all the world but you and is forever possessive over you” that weve lost sight of the “initially scary monster who is actually kind of pathetic and lonely and wants to give you everything but gets it if you have better things to do” archetype that the world so desperately needs in these trying times
