If you read the books, neither James' nor Harry's skin color is ever described. However, they are both described as having black hair that they can't control. It made sense to me that Harry could be mixed-race, and James could be black. Obviously, in the movies, both of them are white, but the books are more open to interpretation, and that is my interpretation.
