do u ever feel like you’ve accidentally tricked certain people into thinking you are smarter and have more potential than you actually do and do you ever think about how disappointed they’ll be when you inevitably crash and burn

Fun fact: Impostor Syndrome is ridiculously common among high-achievers, particularly women. If you identify with this post, odds are pretty good that you’re exactly as smart as people think you are, and the failure you’re afraid of isn’t inevitable at all.

My computer science professor actually talked about this on the first day, it was really cool.

Fun brutal fact: in addition to the existence of imposter syndrome, being “twice exceptional” (also known as 2e) is also a thing. That means being intellectually gifted AND ALSO having a disability that affects your ability to succeed at study or work. Such as ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyscalculia, etc etc etc. A lot of people believe that it’s not possible to be both, but it very much is.

Society tends to have very high expectations for how well gifted people will perform. Society tends to have low expectations for how well disabled people will perform. Society tends to attribute invisible disabilities, including mental illness, to a failure of willpower or effort or a bad attitude.

So if you read this post and went “no, but seriously, this is not just low self esteem on my part, people keep thinking I’m smart and then I keep crashing and burning and disappointing them and they can’t understand why I didn’t live up to their expectations, it happens again and again and when I tell someone how I feel and ask for help, they just tell me to stop being so hard on myself and that I’ll succeed if I have more self-confidence,” it is not just you.

(Also, one of the previous posts in this thread buried the lede a little. Imposter syndrome is ridiculously common in people from underrepresented groups in academia and other high pressure/high status fields, particularly women and people of colour. Maya Angelou did not only feel out of place because she was a woman.)

This essay also totally changed my view on the intersection of impostor syndrome and mental illness.

Do you have time to spare + in the mood for crossovers?

Then I recommend checking out “Miss Disney”!

“Miss Disney combines editing contests with roleplays in a one-year long, annual editing contest. The contest is based as much upon storytelling and character development as raw editing skills. Each season has a new theme and location (previous examples include New York, Tartarus and Never Land).” - X

Fact: bisexuals make up a majority of the LGBT population.

Fact: the majority of bisexuals are closeted.

Theory: If all bisexual people came out, straight people would no longer be the majority.

Do we really make up a majority? Cause the way we’re erased i had no idea. Like really. I thought we were in minority…

The Human Rights Commission of San Francisco released a groundbreaking report on Bisexual Invisibility in 2010 which revealed that, even though only 28% of bisexuals are out (compared to 71% of lesbians and 77% of gay men.) bisexuals out-number gays and lesbians combined, Many studies have followed which verify this data.

Whaaaaat.

Volunteer to help Sacred Stone Camp if you have legal or media skills. Email [email protected], or phone 701-301-2238.

There’s still also the Veterans Stand group that is fundraising and working to help. Currently at 260k/500k goal (they need to reach the goal to maintain a presence and keep supplies flowing into the camps. They currently have boots on the ground right now helping build new infrastructure at the new camp being set up, as well as cleaning up the old).

And another group, RevolutionTruth,  is working to fund for a lawsuit that is currently at 9.5k/25k funded. (feel free to hear part of their arguments here)

Hey there.

I need you to stop and read this for a second.

My best friend and I are creating an app to help closeted LGBTQIA+ kids in abusive situations.

The app is finished, and we plan on submitting it to the Technovation competition in April.

But there’s one problem.

We can’t get the app to help people if we don’t have the data.

The competition states we must source our own data through a survey, and if we don’t get enough participants, we can’t submit or release the app until we prove that there’s a need for it.

We already polled our school’s relatively small GSA, but that gave us biased answers that weren’t enough to successfully draw a conclusion.

Please, take this survey. No matter your sexuality, gender, preference, race, or anything of that matter. We need data to make this work.

More importantly, we need you to make this work.

The difference between this app helping people, and sitting in a trash folder on my computer is the amount of data this survey collects.

If you can, please help us out.

Hey everyone, I took the survey and it literally takes less than a minute. This is a simple and easy way to help out the LGBTQIA+ community. Take it and reblog! - Casper

@autismserenity can you help boost this?

Two applicant profiles were created for a police chief position. One profile was streetwise and one was formally educated. When the streetwise candidate was named Michael and the formally educated candidate was named Michelle, participants tended to choose Michael-and when questioned why, would believe that streetwise characteristics were more important for the job of police chief. But when the streetwise candidate was named Michelle and the formally educated candidate was named Michael, participants would still tend to choose Michael, and would now believe that formal education was more important. This is how we are as humans. Many people who discriminate “feel especially convinced that their selected candidate is the obvious and objective choice.”

We’ve seen firsthand just how powerful, courageous, and badass differently abled people can be. And it looks like the rest of the internet is finally catching up. An array of Twitter users of different ages, races, and genders are showing up to strut their stuff, share their stories, and prove that their disabilities are just part of what makes them cute and fierce as heck.

“We have a voting problem in America. Voting in our country has never been easy, but there’s a new challenge: Politicians are now trying to stop Americans from voting because of who they are likely voting for in an election. Extreme voter suppression laws that disproportionally impact people based on their race or ethnicity, gender, age, or income have started popping up all over the country, and if we don’t fight back, more and more Americans will become disenfranchised.

Over the past decade, momentum has gone dangerously in the wrong direction. Jason Kander started Let America Vote to fight back against proposals across the country that make it harder for eligible voters to exercise their constitutional right to cast a ballot. Whether it’s extreme identification requirements, questionable purges of voter rolls, voter intimidation, new and extreme voter registration processes, or anything that makes voting harder, Let America Vote will be there to lead the way against it.

The full website for Let America Vote is coming soon. Until then, you can learn more here: http://bit.ly/2kOcWew”

What happened in Puerto Rico

I wanna know what happened in Puerto Rico

It’s too late for me to remember where I put the receipts for this, but IIRC more experiments + forced hysterectomies on women.

^^^ yeap…

keep in mind Tuskegee happened at a HBCU and lasted 40 years (originally only planned to last 3 months) and the US knew of a ‘cure” penicillin.

In Puerto Rico: oral birth control pills trials (with not full disclosure given to participants and some deaths during trials) more at PBS “The Puerto Rican Pill Trials“ this also happened in Haiti

My testimonio re: not celebrating the pill here. (tw: white folks don’t like my pov just see comments and this article was posted on other sites where white folks didn’t dig it either).

forced sterilization of PR women (we still have the highest rates of sterilization, read more about the 3 generations of sterilization (non-consensual and consensual) in her book, Matters of Choice, Iris Rodriguez who does qualitative work interviewing women in families, she also coined the phrase “agency within constraints” in her texts about this topic. this has happened with various women of color and women with disabilities throughout US history and currently.

They experimented on Puerto Ricans in the Rockefeller center for years as well, illegally.

And yeah, the medical abuse of white supremacy extends much further than most realize. It’s as big of a industrial complex as the military or the prison system.

Hell they made penicillin by stealing a black woman’s DNA, a black woman who they never compensated and let die off after they stole the DNA.

Because white people don’t like to reblog the truth

“A 1965 survey of Puerto Rican residents found that about one-third of all Puerto Rican mothers, ages 20-49, were sterilized. To put this figure in context, women of childbearing age in Puerto Rico in the 1960s were more than 10 times more likely to be sterilized than women from the United States. These shocking findings suggested that systematic bias influenced the practice of sterilization, not just in Puerto Rico, but in the United States as well.

Since the United States assumed governance of Puerto Rico in 1898, population control had been a major effort. The United States, citing concerns that overpopulation of the island would lead to disastrous social and economic conditions, instituted public policies aimed at controlling the rapid growth of the population. The passage of Law 116 in 1937 signified the institutionalization of the population control program.”

  • A confrontation is coming to Standing Rock.
  • After  Trump signed an executive order to restart construction for the Dakota Access pipeline project, both sides are settling in for what could be the final confrontation between law enforcement and the peaceful resistance at Standing Rock.
  • Leaders of the Standing Rock Sioux and their allies have received word that after Feb. 22, the evacuation deadline set forth by the Army Corps of Engineers, police will begin a forcible evacuation of the camp and its structures. According to Chase Ironeyes of the Lakota People’s Law Project, this could begin as soon as the day after the deadline.
  • As they hope for thousands of additional bodies to arrive in time for the showdown, hundreds remain at the Standing Rock camps intent on seeing the resistance through.
  • But their numbers are a far cry from the 8,000 to 10,000 who were present in early December when a tentative victory was declared. Read more (2/14/17 12:40 PM)
