↳ Day II - Freeshooter
“Rambling? As if! All I’m trying to tell you, traitor, is that your time is up!”
half of all conversations between Org members start this way
that time xigbar was considerate enough to shove roxas out of the way of a heartless instead of watching him get cleaved in two and then laughing about it all the way home
I guess that’s why the Keyblade chose you. But MAN, did it pick a dud this time.
(In a feat of my own genius, I posted this up without really elaborating on something that I really love about this scene, and part of why I chose it. Since it’s already out in the wild, I’m not going to edit the original post and just put my thoughts here.)
The reason why I love this scene, and this line along with it so much is that it’s just another instance of Sora defying every expectation. It goes back to that statement that Xehanort calls him a “dull, ordinary boy,” and further hammers in the fact that Sora was not a chosen Keyblade wielder by any traditional means. He didn’t get an inheritance ceremony, and he was never supposed to have the Keyblade at all. But Sora remains an exceptional case because of his bonds and his heart.
I know that the status of Terra and Ventus as “heroes” could be debatable—Terra may have had noble intentions but was manipulated into darkness at every turn, and Ven wasn’t even trying to be one. Aqua made some noble sacrifices and was officially a Master, so I wouldn’t contest that, but there is a fact that remains for all three of them: they’re trained properly to wield their Keyblades. They understand their weapon, they understand the fundamentals, and their combat is based in formal training. They have a proper master to teach them the way.
And Xigbar dealt with them. Not always in combat directly, but in knowing the qualities that these protectors of the light had, and why they’d be chosen for the Keyblade to begin with. There’s a certain air to them that is a bit different, even with someone younger and less experienced like Ventus, than to Sora, who even has a stance while holding his Keyblade that shows his inexperience with proper training. Of course, in Xigbar’s eye(s), Sora is going to look inferior. Combine that with the knowing of all that Roxas did, that he abandoned the Organization with no intent of returning to their ranks (not much of a team player, right?), and Xigbar has plenty of reason to antagonize him with such a line.
Granted, Xigbar will be Xigbar regardless, but I always love that so many of his lines that seem one-note and throwaway end up actually carrying a bit of weight to them. When I first played KH2, I never thought much of it because back then, we had no idea who the “others” were, aside from maybe past Keyblade wielders. Mickey? Who knows! But looking back on it now, with Birth By Sleep officially part of the timeline, I love that the hints were laid out right from the start… that Xigbar would be connected to the past wielders and the pieces of the puzzle that tied him to them were all being put in place.
Xion, am I going to have to have a talk with Roxas and Axel, because this is getting out of hand…
