“I got a fan letter from a young lady. It was a suicide note.
So I called her, and I said, “Hey, this is Jimmy Doohan. Scotty, from Star Trek.” I said, “I’m doing a convention in Indianapolis. I wanna see you there.”
I saw her — boy, I’m telling you, I couldn’t believe what I saw. It was definitely suicide. Somebody had to help her, somehow. And obviously she wasn’t going to the right people.
I said to her, “I’m doing a convention two weeks from now in St. Louis.” And two weeks from then, in somewhere else, you know? She also came to New York - she was able to afford to got to these places. That went on for two or three years, maybe eighteen times. And all I did was talk positive things to her.
And then all of the sudden — nothing. I didn’t hear anything. I had no idea what had happened to her because I never really saved her address.
Eight years later, I get a letter saying, “I do want to thank you so much for what you did for me, because I just got my Master’s degree in electronic engineering.”
That’s…to me, the best thing I’ve ever done in my life.
I cry every time.
The look on his face in the last one. He is just glowing he is so proud.
You never know how you can help someone.
reblogged this at warp 10…wow
the trifecta
After finally getting unstuck and out of my driveway, I visited Barnes and Noble and picked up another figurine and book to read.
Figure #3: Montgomery "Scotty" Scott
Chief engineer of the Starship Enterprise, played by James Doohan on Star Trek: The Original Series. Fun fact/History Lesson: The phrase "Beam me up, Scotty" was never once uttered in the series. More often, Kirk would say something like "Four to beam up" and he was talking to whoever happened to be at the transporter console (Which was hardly Scotty) One of the films got close but worded it as "Scotty, beam us up". Contrary to popular belief, its not even uttered in the animated series (Though its where they come the closest with "Beam us up, Scotty" The actual phrase comes from a famous bumper sticker that said "Beam me up, Scotty, there's no intelligent life on this planet". It was finally uttered in the franchise when William Shatner himself said it in the audiobook version of The Ashes of Eden. It was also used in the 2009 Star Trek remake.
Book I Picked Up: Little Girl Blue: The Life Of Karen Carpenter
A biography of singer and drummer Karen Carpenter and one half of the famous 1970's pop duo The Carpenters (Which she was in with her brother Richard) I picked it up because not only is she my favorite female singer, but because her story is an interesting one and is also a very heartbreaking one in music history. Karen ended up passing away at only 32 years old on February 4th, 1983 due to a long battle with Anorexia Nervosa. Her untimely death is often credited with bringing the disorder into the public eye and having more attention brought to it.
