Struggling Writer Who Works At A Bookstore

@amyjsoba

I post about writing and speculative fiction tv/movies/books. And also whatever else I feel like 🤷‍♀️. Currently hyper fixating on Doctor Who. She/her/hers

NO BECAUSE IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE FROM A NARRATIVE PERSPECTIVE LISTEN.

In 2005 RTD takes over Doctor Who after 16 years off the air. But rather than bringing back the character with the same characterization, RTD gives the Doctor PTSD a la the Time War. This fundamentally changes how the character is written. The Doctor is not the same. Even after Moffat undoes the Time War he continues writing the Doctor in a similar manner.

Fast forward to 2022 when RTD takes over the show again. The Doctor has been running. The character continually ignores their feelings and never talks about their past or the people they traveled with. Companions have been asking the same questions about the Doctor’s behavior. For 17 years.

Rather than continue on with that same characterization, RTD decides to shift the character in a monumental way.

15 has had time to heal. The bi-regeneration is confusing but 15 says he is the way he is because 14 stopped and healed.

15 isn’t just a new incarnation, he’s a new expression of the Doctor. And the best part is, RTD already said that in so many words! He called Ncuti the new new Doctor. THIS IS WHAT HE MEANT.

Help me out Doctor Who Tumblr—which RTD1 era Moffat episode(s) do you think is best? Not your favorite—the best. Be as objective as you can.

This poll ended up being a small sample size but it's interesting that Moffat's series 1 episodes won because those were the most RTD edited. Like...Jack is obviously an RTD character, and those episodes' beats more closely follow Russel's writing. That moment where Captain Jack teleports away and leaves the Doctor and Rose to talk about dancing is SUCH an RTD scene.

I would guess most people who voted in this poll prefer RTD's writing to Moffat's but obviously, I can't prove that. I wonder if this poll would skew differently if it got in front of mostly Moffat fans.

It's also interesting because the fandom usually places "Blink" as one of the best episodes of DW but I agree it's not as good as Moffat's other RTD stories.

I’m a Yankee so I watched in on BBC America. And this will probably mean the end of the channel. Since Doctor Who was mainly the reason the channel existed and they rarely show actual British shows anymore. Graham Norton, Top Gear, and David Attenborough and that it - and even that’s scattered amongst mainly American movies and shows like Next Gen, Bones, and Law & Order. I wouldn’t be surprised if BBC sold their interest in the channel. With things like BritBox it’s redundant anymore

It’s hard to say for sure but you make a great point about redundancy.

I believe BBC America airs episodes of stuff like Graham Norton weeks after it’s been broadcast in Britain so I’m interested to know how long it will take for the 60th to air on BBC and then be posted to Disney+. Hopefully immediately as that cuts down on piracy.

There’s lots of unanswered questions about the licensing of Who. When will New Who move from HBO MAX to Disney+? Will classic Who ever be posted to Disney+? RTD is hoping to bring Classic back to iplayer but nothing’s been confirmed.

For now all we can do is wait and see.
