Struggling Writer Who Works At A Bookstore

Hi Tumblr 👋. I’m a struggling writer who works at a bookstore. I’m here to talk about speculative fiction (book form, movie form, tv form, whatever form), writing, and anything else I feel like. Will probably repost or upload some memes. I like memes (but really? who doesn’t).

Right now I’m working on a far-future space opera novel with telekinetics and deeply rich world building. It’s a lot of work, so while I figure out what the hell is happening with my second draft, you can check out this novelette I wrote. It’s set in the universe I’m working on, hooray!

Im currently querying a short story also set in this universe. I would love my bio to read, “published struggling writer who works at a bookstore.” That’s the dream.

I just had this thought. It’s so interesting that whenever people talk about Martha Jones they’re like “Her character was treated like trash. She deserved better. It’s not fair” but when people talk about Clara they’re like “Her and 12 are so toxic but that’s the point I love it.”

Martha and 10’s relationship is also unhealthy. But Martha’s journey is actually hella empowering because she learns her own self worth. She learns she doesn’t need the Doctor’s approval. She doesn’t need to become like the Doctor. She steps away on her own terms. She becomes a better person not because of the Doctor, but in spite of him.

I feel like that’s something to be celebrated, not pitied. She’s one of the few NuWho companions who have this development. So yeah. I feel like we should be embracing her arc for all of its points, not just parts we feel are bad. I feel it’s a disservice to her character to only pity her.

I seriously teared up reading this. Circle is insanely good. It is comforting and thoughtful. It’s one of my favorite albums. I listen to it on repeat without skipping anything. ONEW deserves the world and I hope he is able to come back in 2024.

Went back and did some heavy editing of the chapters I wrote for my novel’s second draft. It’s always encouraging and discouraging because I have improved immensely (yay!) but then I once thought that writing was good (Booo). Makes me wonder about my current level. Is it good enough for submission yet? No. I know it’s not. But we’re getting closer.

Right now I’m focusing on cutting things that don’t need to be explained. How the character feels, unnecessary inner dialogue, clunky sentences, anything that’s been repeated ect. I shaved over 1,000 words from the second chapter. It’s so much better.

Back when I was on Xitter there were so many people insisting that RTD was going to make the 60th anniversary super Meta and tell all those fans who love the past and David Tennant that they can’t cling to the past anymore and he’s only back to teach the fandom a lesson 🖕blah blah.

But instead of giving the finger to the fandom, RTD lovingly wrapped a bow on all of NuWho and said, “it’s time for the Doctor to heal and move on but we’re going to do that by giving Fourteen his best friend. He’s going to live a good life surrounded by family. He’s going to be happy and talk about all of his adventures and his past.”

It’s so beautiful. Thank you RTD. Because it is time to move into something new—not because the fandom is shitty—but because that’s what’s best for the character.

Leaving Fourteen happy was so soothing for me, too. And for a lot of people, I think. That’s the bonus.

And let’s be real: writing something meta to chastise a fandom is a terrible way to write. I never believed RTD would do that.

NO BECAUSE IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE FROM A NARRATIVE PERSPECTIVE LISTEN.

In 2005 RTD takes over Doctor Who after 16 years off the air. But rather than bringing back the character with the same characterization, RTD gives the Doctor PTSD a la the Time War. This fundamentally changes how the character is written. The Doctor is not the same. Even after Moffat undoes the Time War he continues writing the Doctor in a similar manner.

Fast forward to 2022 when RTD takes over the show again. The Doctor has been running. The character continually ignores their feelings and never talks about their past or the people they traveled with. Companions have been asking the same questions about the Doctor’s behavior. For 17 years.

Rather than continue on with that same characterization, RTD decides to shift the character in a monumental way.

15 has had time to heal. The bi-regeneration is confusing but 15 says he is the way he is because 14 stopped and healed.

15 isn’t just a new incarnation, he’s a new expression of the Doctor. And the best part is, RTD already said that in so many words! He called Ncuti the new new Doctor. THIS IS WHAT HE MEANT.

I am so excited for Ncuti Gatwa to be the Doctor and I am simultaneously DREADING saying goodbye to David next week. I don’t want his time to end yet. Actually, what I really want is to watch Ncuti and David in their respective stories at the same time. I can’t win 😭😭

The way RTD solved the Doctor/Donna issue was just a little too bullshitty for my taste. It read more like “this is an issue I want to get past so I will present a Very Easy solution” instead of following through on what was an extremely complicated and terrible event that changed Donna’s life.

I loved the idea of the Doctor part passing down to Rose! I loved the idea that it slowed the transformation but didn’t stop it completely. I just think that should’ve been the ticking clock throughout the specials. Doctor and Donna have to figure out a way to save both Donna AND Rose. Can they save both? Or maybe because of who Rose is she’ll always be more stable than Donna.

But alas. It was all just “let go of”. I think I’ll always be a bit disappointed by that.
