Logan, Indiana

This is a southbound Amtrak Floridian at a tiny spot on the map known as Logan. The location is along the Louisville & Nashville Railroad (Monon) between Bloomington and Bedford, Indiana.

I attempted to shoot here, where the line crosses over Salt Creek, several times, but never really nailed it: here’s another try (with a northbound train)…

The train of legacy equipment at this time, nearly always sporting a dome, was powered by two EMD SDP40Fs. Two images by Richard Koenig; taken November 14th and December 9th of 1976.

Limedale Tower

Here we see another southbound Amtrak Floridian on the Louisville & Nashville, former Monon. This time it’s seen crossing over Conrail, former Pennsylvania, at Limedale, just south of Greencastle, Indiana.

Southbound Amtrak Floridian

Here we see the same train, in three different locations, as it moves down the Louisville & Nashville, former Monon.

The first picture has the train near the old frame depot at Clear Creek, Indiana, just south of Bloomington. The next two images were taken at the “S” curve just north of Peerless. And the final photograph has the same train street running adjacent to the county courthouse in downtown Bedford.

Four images by Richard Koenig; taken November 6th 1976.

Receiving Orders

Train orders, in the form of flimsies, are set up in both the upper and lower forks here at Effingham, Illinois. This images shows a westbound National Limited approaching the station.

This is happening on the Conrail line between Indianapolis and St. Louis, which is former Pennsy here west of Terre Haute. The diamond for the Illinois Central mainline is just behind the photographer. It seems the train will make a stop given the baggage person at the ready. While the fireman is ready to grab the orders while rolling by, it seems the conductor might get his by walking over and snagging them while on foot in this case, but I can’t recall.

So connect the Windsor-Quebec Corridor and the Northeast Corridor with HSR, that isn't that bad of an idea. It doesn't even need to be that distant dream that is Meglev, just making it fast frequent rail would do it, I would prioritize getting a connection between Boston and Montreal in this system but it is an exciting idea

Anyways the travel times on that map are insane, but it would be a good system still. Anyways here is a picture of the proposal from a geographic map instead of a stylish visual

So anyways I decided to edit this to make it more of an interconnected system but adding Boston to Montreal via Albany and Boston to Toronto via Buffalo as well as a Chicago Connection

fwiw: these maps were made by @segregationbydesign on Twitter, based on an analysis of flight patterns, who does incredible Transit related work. Here are the extensions they proposed:

Bringing this back up because it is one of my favorite posts I've been a part of

Late Sunday Afternoon Departure A view from Roosevelt Road: a train seen here departing Chicago's Union Station in the late afternoon on a Sunday. This may be number five, the San Francisco Zephyr (departed at four PM).

The legacy Amtrak equipment, as well as the motive power (two SDP40Fs), is adorned with the Phase II paint scheme

The Sears Tower is a major player here of course—difficult not to compose with it in mind. One image by Richard Koenig; taken October 9th 1977.
