Haunting

NOT A PR0MPT

******

Hero swore she recognized him. Thinking back on how he looked before was difficult as she looked to him now. Stared, rather. She shook her head, ducked it down, and moved along.

Leader would be expecting her any moment, so it was important for her to show up focused and prepared. Forget the familiar looking man; she had an idea for the agency.

Being only a door away, she thought it would be easy to slip away unseen. Alas, she was disappointed.

"Hero?"

She swore beneath her breath. It was exactly who she thought; it was Villain.

Groceries

(NOT A PR0MPT)

******

“Hey wait!” Villain felt someone brush his shoulder at the sound of the words, but he disregarded it. He was just another busy person on the street, right?

“Wait!” Villain heard again, then the hand grabbed his shoulder before spinning him around. “I recognize you,” Civilian said.

“No, you don’t. Because if you did, then I’d recognize you, too.” But Villain did remember this person. Looking at their face, he recognized Civilian as Hero’s lover. “If you know what’s good for you, you’ll keep walking.”

Maybe his words were a little…brutal for being ‘another busy person on the street’, but oh, how Villain couldn’t stand to look at Civilian’s face. How he couldn’t stand imagining how many times it had frowned since losing Hero.

“You work at the grocery store, right? I don’t think you’re that scary.”

Villain blinked. “Yeah,” he whispered. Then, more loudly, “Yeah, the grocery store. So many faces in one pay period- one day even- that it’s hard to remember just one face.” Villain didn’t work in a grocery store. In fact, a grocery store might be the last place he would ever try working at. Still, it was a good cover-up if it meant getting out of this conversation.

“I get it.” Civilian nodded, then anxiously tapped a foot. “Hey, man, I’m sorry to hold you up. I just…you looked so familiar. I almost thought you reminded me of someone, but…”

But she’s dead. Villain knew how the story went. He and Hero had gotten along at one point in life- when they were two young siblings playing in the woods. Things changed as they got older. Villain changed as they grew older. More calloused and bruised. Broken and damaged. He became angry, while Hero remained as soft as the decorative pillows she used to stack on her bed.

You know there are too many pillows when you can’t see your own sheets, right?’ Villain used to say. What ever happened to that time of innocence?

Before Villain knew it, there was a phone in front of his eyes. His sister stood next to Civilian in a picture, beaming with her newly straightened teeth. “She’d just gotten her braces taken off,” Villain almost said, but couldn’t. Saying that would confirm Civilian’s suspicion.

“I’m going to be honest with you,” Civilian told. “I didn’t stop you because I recognized you from the store. I stopped you because- well, you look like an old friend of mine. You two could be siblings.”

Villain swallowed. We were siblings.

“We do look similar, huh? Strange coincidence.”

“Never met the guy, but Hero used to talk about having a brother. It was a sour subject most of the time,” Civilian explained, “but other times, I swear I’d never seen her smile so big, or laugh so loudly. She loved her brother. Think she was always a little disappointed about his disappearance. Sad.”

“Look, it was great talking to you, and it’s neat I could remind you of someone, but I have to get home to my wife. Bless her heart,” Villain laughed. “She couldn’t even cook rice if she tried. Rice!”

Just as Villain didn’t work at the grocery store, he also had no wife. Maybe he would like one, a partner whose eyes gave him comfort whenever he gazed upon them. Soft hands and nimble fingers to rub his back when he was stressed. A loving tone that was spoken from the deepest part of her heart. But Villain didn’t feel deserving of that. How could he when he was responsible for his own sister’s death?

“Are you alright?”

Without looking, Villain convinced himself it was Hero’s voice, checking in on him as if the two of them were still teens. “I don’t feel fine he admitted,” but as his eyes found Civilian’s he shook his head frantically. “I am fine,” he said. “I’m sorry, Civilian. I need to go now.”

Not realising his own mistake, Villain began briskly walking away.

Only three steps into his departure, Civilian said, “I haven’t told you my name.”

P2 Too Smart for Your Own Good

Part 1 here

“You don’t have to kill me,” Assistant quickly said, dropping the paper which she had been sweating into with hot hands. “I’ll burn them- the files. I’ll move on, be your assistant just like before.” Tears were welling in her eyes faster than she could think to wipe them away.

Leader hummed then chuckled. His eyes remained on Assistant as he stepped forward, forward, until he was blocking the door to get out. “As great of an assistant as you are, you’re more trouble than anything. I might become the company’s next target should your lips become loose. Oh, now that’s a thought.”

Assistant swallowed.

“Stitching your lips would be too obvious.”

No.

“I’d cut out your tongue, but who am I to think you wouldn’t try talking to people? Show them your empty mouth?”

“I wouldn’t,” she blurted, and squeezed her eyes shut after. How stupid could she be? Saying what she did- it was just an invitation for Leader to pull through with...with...Assistant couldn’t think it. “Please,” she keened, so close to spilling her panicked and desperate tears. “I won’t- won’t say anything. I swear. I swear on my-” life. So, she could become dumber. “Please,” Assistant finished.

“I’m tempted to, but you still haven’t picked up those papers you dropped beneath my desk.”

I can do that, Assistant thought. She would do that- because her life depended on it.

In no time, Assistant was on her knees, crawling towards the sprawled files, the ones titled ‘Terminated.’ The ones which belonged to those who sacrificed their lives for others and were betrayed by the very man who was supposed to be leading them.

The papers were easy to gather and stack back up. They hadn’t become mixed up when Assistant let them slide from her lap earlier.

“Very good. Thank you, Assistant.”

Her hands shook as she held the papers out for Leader to take.

“Do you see the problem?” he asked.

“W-what?” Assistant’s eyes remained focused on her feet. She wasn’t sure if she could face Leader, look into his murderous eyes.

“You’re still afraid,” Leader said. “I can’t have an assistant who’s afraid of me. It would be just as obvious to the others as stitching your pretty lips shut.”

“No!” Her eyes squeezed shut as she realized her loud volume. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to-” Leader cut her off.

“Go pull the fire alarm.”

“The fire- why? Why?” What would pulling the fire alarm do? There was no fire. It would just create a false alarm, a- a drill. Everyone in the building would file out as if the situation were real and- “No. No, please no.”

Leader settled Assistant with a gaze which made the contents of her stomach churn. “Go. Pull. The alarm.”

In a moment of panic, Assistant allowed her hot tears to flow down her cheeks. “You’re going to kill me,” she said. “You- you want me to pull the alarm so there’s no chance of a witness finding you in- in the act. Leader- Leader, please. I won’t spill. I promise. I promise, I won’t. I promise. Please.” The words kept spilling, affirmation after affirmation, plea after plea. “I won’t say a word,” Assistant cried.

“Oh, I know you won’t. I’ll make sure of it.”

Looking to Leader, Assistant’s chest bounce, holding back scared sobs. She’d followed her boss’ eyes to the alarm, and she wanted nothing more than to jump out of his office windows. The office was high enough that she’d only be hurt, though, and that meant Leader would gather her back up, put her in the nurse’s clinic. He would play off her truthful rambles of betrayal as being results from a thumped head and concussion. And when Assistant was healed? Well, she had a feeling a fate worse than death would be delivered.

Her fingers settled on the lever. She didn’t even remember walking over here.

“Pull it now.”

Assistant nodded, and at the same time she did, the alarm began screeching. Someone else in the building had pulled it before she could. Had they been outside the door when Assistant learned of Leader’s secret?

And more importantly...was she saved?

Too Smart for Your Own Good

Files. Where did Leader keep the files? Not the employee files, but- well, shit. As Assistant thought about it, having a closer look at the employee files might help in connecting the dots, too.

The number of casualties was increasing at a slope too steep for Assistant’s liking. First it was Sidekick, then Hero herself. Then Other Hero, and yet another, all within a measly two weeks. Four deaths in fourteen days.

It was unusual, wasn’t it? Usually when there was a death within the organization, members were instructed to train harder, but also to grieve. They weren’t sent back onto the field without a second of notice, nor were they so deliberately egged on to fight for vengeance.

No one even knew Leader had a connection with Sidekick until the day of their...passing. Leader had made an announcement from the intercom- surprising Assistant greatly since he usually made her do this- for all members of the facility to gather in the auditorium. Secretaries rushed to set up a podium before the crowd became too large.

Leader, of course, told everyone in the building about the unfortunate killing of Sidekick. His face was red as he spoke, and little could tell whether it was pain or anger until he screamed that if he didn’t have Villain’s head by the end of the month then he...then he would break down. He would quit his job.

The teams couldn’t afford losing Leader, and anyways, they were a bit pissed off at hearing Villain killed one of their own. Villain was an evil scrooge, one who made threats, but never acted on them- at least not until now that he killed Sidekick and was now butchering the rest of the organization.

Oddly enough, though, Villain was spotted creeping through street fairs in town, head down, tucked into his shirt. News reports said he was desperate, asking camera men to point the cameras away. Usually, he was very public, not caring who saw him where, yet never spoke aloud for the public didn’t deserve his attention.

Maybe he was scheming something and didn’t want his location to be known, but Villain was craftier than to walk out in the open, in crowds. This was something different. Villain was trying to hide. Not because various heroes of the organization were after him- he wasn’t frightened of them. He’d fight them- every single one of them- tooth and nail. Right now, though? Villain was scared, and it couldn’t be without a great reason.

Where Leader was at now, Assistant was only somewhat aware. He was downstairs, having another rally, detailing another death within the organization by a man who was hiding in crowds and begging newsmen to keep his location secret. It didn’t add up, not in the slightest, and yet Assistant was the only one who thought to sneak into Leader’s office to hopefully uncover the greatest scandal of all time. She wasn’t sure what the scandal was yet, but she knew Leader was up to...to something.

Two filing cabinets were left. Being Leader's assistant, she had the key to open them. Employee files had to be in here. Assistant had already checked the trash beforehand since several of the employees were supposedly killed. Maybe he would have no need for their information anymore. But they weren't in the overall company's trash cans, or even dumpsters, and they weren't in Leader's can by his desk. All that was left was these two filing cabinets.

With slightly trembling hands, Assistant pushed the key into the first's lock. It eased open with a series of clunks Assistant tried desperately to avoid. There was no way for filing cabinets to ever be silent, even if one were to grease the tracks. As a sign of caution, Assistant tossed her head back to make sure the door was as ever still as it had been before.

Within the cabinet laid a golden treasure- the employee files. And stacked right on top? Those who were just killed. Assistant wasted no time in pulling them out, pushing the cabinet shut, and locking it back up. She would read the files in the bathroom, where no one would suspect her, and when she was done, she’d sneak them back into Leader’s office. Hopefully, she wouldn’t find anything worth further investigation, but if she did...Assistant shook her head. If it were worthy of further investigation, then she would figure it out later. For now, she made her way to the door with the files tucked beneath her arm.

“Assistant?” The voice questioned her before she even opened the door all the way. She nearly slammed it shut in theory of being caught. Instead, she only sucked in a surprised breath and clutched the files closer as she eased the door open more.

“Leader, I- I hope the speech went well?” She followed his eyes to her arm and then past her- undoubtedly to the filing cabinets. “I took the liberty of cleaning out the clutter. Figured it might help- uh- relieve some of your stress, you know?”

Leader hummed, stepping into the room, and therefore causing Assistant to back awkwardly into the doorframe. So, she was dismissed?

“I presume you have a minute?” Leader had already rounded the desk himself, sitting in his office chair.

No, not really. “Of course, Sir.” Assistant walked away from the open door but was quickly asked to close it. She grimaced as she turned her back on Leader to do so. Keeping the files tucked beneath her arm, Assistant took a seat across from him like she intended to do with the door open. “Was there something you needed handled differently or...?”

“Those files, actually.”

This might be my only moment. Assistant grabbed the files, setting them in her lap. “Oh?” Flipping the top folder open, she continued, “I only took them because I saw-” Assistant gasped despite her previous efforts to remain calm. What she saw only confirmed any suspicion she had about Leader’s sudden and suspicious behaviours.

“The others didn’t suspect a thing.”

She looked up at the same time she stood from her seat, the remaining files sliding from her lap and onto the floor in a scattered mess of papers. The paper which sent her into such a frenzy stayed clutched in her hand. Assistant couldn’t help but to glance between the written word “terminated” and Leader himself. “You did it,” she said, and tears burned brilliantly in her eyes. “You killed them, all of them.”

“Too smart for your own good, Assistant.” Leader stood from his own seat, although much calmer than when Assistant had. Sticking his hands in his pockets, he stepped forward. “Clever of you, to clean out the garbage, but you see”- he gestured to the messy pile on the floor- “these files are the closest I have to trophies. A day will come when I die, and who would ever know that I single-handedly fooled an entire company into thinking I was the good guy if not for these papers? How would my legacy ever be known?”

“You’re sick,” Assistant said. “You’re sick, but- but it’s fine. I’ll speak to the head nurse and she’ll know what to-”

“What a shame! I really did like you, you know that? Such a selfless girl, one so willing to do anything- almost- and under any stressful time crunch.” Leader took another step forward and frowned as his assistant froze. “It’s a shame your file will be added on top of those- and I can’t even hire another assistant to pick them up from the floor where you tossed them. Say,” He smiled, reaching a hand towards the trembling girl. “Why don’t you pick them up for me? One last task before I lay you down? Do you prefer that term? I’ll put you down like a dog- how about that?”

'Juniper Trees'

******

"When do you stop?" Villain asked in Hero's ear, cheek brushing the blindfold wrapped around their opponent's head.

Hero was shaking. Of course, they would be. Still, it was something they themselves couldn't help noting.

"When do you stop?"

"At- at the trees."

Villain tightened newly placed fingers on Hero's shoulder. "What trees, Hero? Tell me you know what you're to do."

"The trees- the jun-juniper trees."

The grip loosened. "Good. Very good. And how will you know they're junipers?"

"The berries," Hero choked. "I'll feel for the berries, and- and then..." They shook their head.

"Yes?" Villain pressed.

"When I feel them, I'll eat them." The sentence was soft, whispered as if Hero couldn't believe they were actually saying it.

Villain nodded, then squeezed Hero's shoulder again- a signal to continue.

"And I'll sit where I find the junipers. I won't- won't leave. I'll wait for"- they sniffled- "I'll wait for Supervillain to find me."

Lips curved up against Hero's ear and they took a shuddering breath as Villain whispered, "Perfect."

You are the most perfect plot twist...

******

"You'll grow used to it, love." Villain dragged a smooth, not calloused finger along the back of Hero's neck, barely contacting the leather beneath their touch.

"Don't call me 'love,'" the hero growled and tried to yank forward- away from Villain, but she was ensnared. Villain hooked the collar and pulled back, causing Hero to fall from her kneel unto her bottom.

Chuckling both at the Hero's demand and the way she was so easily controlled, Villain asked amused, "Why? Is that what dear Caretaker called you? You should have known you couldn't be in a relationship with me on your tail."

You weren't, Hero wanted to say, Your lackeys were. You're a coward who can't even show her face. You're not untouchable.
