Hey y’all!

I don’t post nearly enough, if ever, but this is what I’m up to when I’m not at work or online.

I’m part of Wildlife Rescue of Dade County, one of two rehab centers in Miami Fl, and the only one that can take rabies vector species.

We treat all injured, orphaned, or displaced native wildlife, including raccoons, foxes, squirrels, possums, songbirds, raptors, snakes, even not so common things like otters, bats, and eagles.

All of these pictures are from the past two months! This is just a small sample!

Those two barn owls up top? Released yesterday after 2 months and 2 days of raising. The raccoon below had a broken arm. The vulture has a permanent broken wing and lives on the property. The ruby throated hummingbird also has a broken wing. The Cooper’s hawk was a window strike victim while the red shouldered hawk next to it is recovering from rodenticide poisoning. The baby squirrel was orphaned and the coachwhip was run over. The otter was rabies positive!

We are a nonprofit that runs solely out of pocket(we all have full time jobs outside of this, there are no paid staff) or on donations, if we are lucky enough to get them.

Our PayPal is [email protected], but most of all, we would just like your support on our major social media platforms!

Find us on

-Facebook

-Instagram @wildliferescuedadecounty

-Twitter @RescueDade

And once our website is fixed up, at dadewildliferescue.com

Check us out, and if you have any questions, shoot them my way! I love this organization so much, and I’m proud to do my part in keeping dade county wild.

Waffles here. Every couple of months someone comes across a post of us and accuses mom of mistreating us because of Mango’s shell. They don’t bother to message mom personally to ask what her story is but instead reblog our picture with accusations and sometimes mean comments that get shared out of our control. This very much hurts us.

Mango came to live with us when she was two years old. She spent those two years with no water dish, no uv, cold temperatures and a diet of head lettuce and strawberries. Her shell looked like a cubed mango (how she got her name) and it was able to be squeezed like a tennis ball. Within a few months of living with mom, Mango had a hard shell, her new growth was coming in proper and she was healthy. She will always have her bumps and because of the previous deformities, some of that growth will never be proper because of creases and angles that can’t be fixed. Mango has a wonderful life with all the proper food, nutrients, and she is definitely a sun worshipper.

As for those who accuse me of having a bad shell because they don’t understand that poor lighting or shadows can distort things, I invite you to look at my picture above in proper lighting. Do I look pyramided? I didn’t think so.

So the next time you see a picture of us or any other reptile and you think we don’t look ideal, stop and message the owner. Ask what the animal’s story is or offer constructive suggestions. Don’t just reblog with cruel and uninformed comments. So many of our reptile friends are rescues and I think it’s unfair to my mom and other humoms (and dads) that they get accused of abuse when they actually saved that reptile’s life.

No go ahead and reblog the crap out of this so we can stop this nonsense.

It’s super discouraging to good rescuers when people accuse them of abusing their animals! Try asking OP first- not WADTT and definitely not me. I don’t take care of those torts; I don’t know what’s going on first-hand, and I’m not an expert in their morphology, health, or captive care.

For what it’s worth, I think Waffles looks fantastic and while Mango does have signs of past neglect, the care their mom gives them is great.

My husband says it’s a rat snake, but I’m worried it’s a black diamond. Can anyone tell? Kill it or leave it? We need rat snakes, but I need my dogs, you feel me?

EDIT: It’s a rat snake, just not the kind I’m use to since I’m from Louisiana.

Dekays brown snake
