The Sphinx:
One of the most widely known of mythical creatures, the Sphinx comes in various forms, which vary on the culture it is regarded from. Unlike the well known Great Sphinx of Giza, this particular Sphinx is of Greek origin. This Sphinx is portrayed as a woman with the haunches of a lion, tail of a snake (viper to be exact), wings and talons of a bird. Different from her male counterpart in Egypt, this Sphinx is more known for asking riddles and trying to stump the heroes challenging her.This portrayal is best known in the tale of the Theben (Greece) king, Oedipus. If anyone answered a riddle wrong, it’s safe to say that the unfortunate party would fall victim to a horrible end. However, much like her male counterpart, the female Sphinx is known for guarding temples and other sacred sights.
