Guys, the first images of Irma’s level of devastation are coming out of Barbuda and it’s heartbreaking. The President of Barbuda says that 90% of the island is uninhabitable, upwards of 60% of the TOTAL population are now homeless because the hurricane destroyed virtually every building and home on the island, and that the estimated damage is valued at no less than $200 million dollars. That’s money a small island like that doesn’t have. They’re saying it’s going to take years to rebuild and Hurricane Jose is right behind Irma on the same path which means they could be hit twice. This is just one of the islands being affected.
Please, show up for the Caribbean like you did for Houston. There is no safety net for any of these islands including mine. They’ll rely entirely on foreign aid. Find local charities or global trustworthy charities (NOT the Red Cross) and make a donation asking them to aid the Caribbean. There’s whole countries being turned into rubble with no financial means to repair their infrastructures. They’re going to need help.

Stop wanting things to be spoonfed to you. While you waited for someone to link you to sources, you could’ve done it yourself and already donated to people who desperately need it.

- Habitat For Humanity [83% rating on Charity Navigator // Because with islands like Barbuda 90% destroyed and French St. Martin said to be 95% destroyed then people are going to need homes built]
- Catholic Relief Services [90% rating on Charity Navigator // For those who would want to donate to a religious organization]
If there is a note or comments section on their donation page please do let them know that you would want your money to go to their Caribbean relief efforts. Houston and Florida have the US government backing them in whatever they will need but these islands will have very little except for these charities to fall back if they have any hope of rebuilding what seems to be entire countries in some cases. For the people who lost everything even a few bucks will go a long way.
For the most part I would suggest staying away from privately launched GoFundMes unless you know the person directly. Ultimately, you just never know where those funds are going to end up and if your money will be used wisely. Sure, the same can be said for charity organizations but at least there is a better shot at possibly helping through them. The five listed above are world known and have been studied by charity oversight organizations. It’s as close to perfect as we’re going to get.

if a celebrity dies and all you see are positive remembrance posts when they were a known abuser or a pedophile, you’re not going to sit back and let that celebrity not be held accountable for their actions. like it’s cool that they had a huge impact on music, but they also were a bad person. it’s not being negative and trying to prevent people from mourning, it’s shedding light on who that person was.
think for a second about victims of pedophiles and abuse. think for a second how they feel seeing someone who is a known abuser and pedophile be remembered for their accomplishments, but not for the harm they caused people. think of how angry those victims are.
are they being negative or spreading negativity by forcing you to remember the horrible part of a celebrity? no. if you’re going to remember someone’s life, you better be prepared to remember the dark and the ugly that you’re trying to ignore when you’re mourning too! cause victims certainly aren’t gonna let you forget

Basically they got three robots, told them that two of them were given “dumbing pills”, and they asked one which pill it was given.
The robot of course wasn’t sure if it had or hadn’t yet and said “I don’t know”, but after it looked at the other silent robots (who were actually unable to speak from the start), it realized that its fully functional, and then was finally able to say “I know now.”
It can assess itself and its behavior in relation to other robots and people. It can make that differentiation between “me” and “I”, and understand that it is an individual.
People are shrugging this off, but this is a similar self-awareness test to how people put mirrors in front of animals to see if it treats the reflection like another animal or treat it like a reflection.

yea but this is an algorithm, not actual thinking. Any computer could could perform the same function given a similar line of code. It’s not like this robot will rise up and rule the world, it’s just going through a short process. Speak > no reply = ‘dumbing pill’.

If you are unaware of what has been happening in Ukraine, please take the time to read this (it’s short and concise!):
Ukrainians have been peacefully protesting in Ukraine’s capital city, Kyiv for more than two months in a protest dubbed EuroMaidan (Maidan’s Facebook page in English, as well as their English blog for those who want more information). Recently, these protestors have been harassed by militia men and riot police sent out on the orders of President Victor Yanukovich. Some of the harassments have turned violent, with both protesters and police involved. Thousands of people on the Maidan are at risk, and as of Wednesday, three have died battling riot police. Here are FOUR articles depicting Kyiv as of right now:
As of January 16th, the Ukrainian parliament (under concealed orders from Russian-rule supporters) has “passed illegal, unconstitutional laws restricting political speech and the freedoms of assembly, association, and press, taking Ukraine out of the community of free nations, and placing it under a Soviet-style tyranny.” This means that the Ukrainian people have been essentially cut off from the world. Pro-revolution television updates have been either edited or unaired. Newspapers have been censored. There will be no digital access to the outside world (article here). The photo comes from protests happening in Bulgaria right now. Students are protesting poverty and corruption in Bulgaria’s Socialist-backed government, chaining themselves to the doors of Sofia University and clashing with police outside of parliament.
After the photo was taken it quickly went viral
