1) THANK YOU

2) THANK YOU

3) yup!!! 25 now. OH SHOOT I NEED TO CHANGE MY TUMBLR SIDEBAR thank you for reminding me. i did have a good time!!! i saw my irl friends for the first time in a full year, which was

4) i have taken a total of one (1) commission in the past, because only one person ever asked. at the time i was fairly sure i’d never do it again, because it took me THREE YEARS. THREE YEARS. and i had such a good time working with my client that we became friends and i was convinced no other paying job could ever top that. but?? if someone had an idea i could work with, and could match my asking price, and was okay with ridiculously long waiting periods, sure.

but like…… i reserve the right to say no, or say yes and later change my mind if it’s genuinely not working. (although that’s not to say i’d give up. i worked on @cassammydean’s fic until it was done, even though it took 3 complete re-writes.) (fyi i’d only accept payment when the fic is done and posted) (and all info would be exchanged privately)

and hell yeah i’d take art commissions??? never done that before. would totally do an illustrated fic too.

this is my plan for the rest of 2018:

  • July: finish DCBB, then GISH
  • August: hopefully co-write something with @thebloggerbloggerfun
  • September: finish editing that goddamn Harry Potter/SPN fusion fic I wrote in 2015
  • October: Halloween fic
  • November to December: Christmas fic

and a BUNCH OF SMALL FICS in the meantime, no doubt. and somewhere in this i gotta write a fic for @nunubunkie that i promised in 2014 because she asked for a story in exchange for art because i wanted art for a sci-fi fic i wrote that’s DONE AND COMPLETED and has literally been sitting there collecting dust for nearly 4 years because i haven’t written Kiki’s ficlet

(honestly i feel so thrilled even typing this, i’m so fudging lucky i get to do this)

my point is, depending on the length of the story you seem to be implying you’re after, i can fit you in somewhere~

if anyone’s wondering: the commission fic was What We Ache For (93k sex worker Cas AU)

A few tips everybody should consider. I’ve experienced all those and some more. I’m not good at english but I hope you get it. Go and support some artists out there and let them draw you nice shit. Not as nice as FairyNekoDesu but still will be cool so give them a chance and you’ll be surprised.

THIIIIS.

All of these things.

Especially the deadline. If you don’t have a deadline thats way in advanced it’s not gonna get done by then. I am almost always taking on a ton of projects at once and sometimes need a break from it to: work on stuff for me, work on stuff for friends, search for jobs, be the work slave of parents, actually relax and try to relief stress, technical difficulties, researching on how to do stuff, ect.

Sometimes it’s done in a day. Sometimes it’s done literally a year later. But I always update the people I work with so they know I haven’t forgotten.

Do NOT rush your commissioner. Let them work at their pace and it will be worth it. Rushing them insures a rush job which will very likely make the quality decline.

All this is true. Also, ref sheets are the most important thing ever. I can’t stress that enough. They make the job A LOT easier (instead of having to compare 10 different pics between each other and see that everything fits, you just look at 1!!)  If you plan in commissioning your character a lot, or even if its not yours (like from an anime or something) Either commission one or look for ref sheets of the show (because there are!).

Also i strongly suggest not using Instant Messaging. Information can be lost pretty easily there and it’s hard to come back to it. Use emails instead. The info stays there, and it’s easy to search for it. It’s also an excellent way to keep track of the descriptions, so if either the client or artist made a mistake, you can see the email threads and see who’s right straight away. also pushy clients LOVE instant messaging. Pls no.

This post is really nice! :D

Thanks to the incredible generosity of many, I was able to earn a spot on this year’s Dreams2Acts: Nicaragua team! Between now and November, I’ll be doing fic commissions to help pay for my trip.

DETAILS

  • $10 for every 1000 words (ex. $25 = 2500 words)
  • $20 = I will beta your work! :)

HOW TO COMMISSION

  1. Contribute to my fundraiser here
  2. Send me your name & contribution amount
  3. We’ll discuss specifics & I’ll write you a fic (writing tag / ao3)

I am not selling my rights to the fics. I reserve the right to post the fics on social media and online archives. Under no circumstances may the fics be copied or reposted.

Everything I raise will be put toward the trip and I’ll use any remaining amount to purchase school supplies for the students. Please REBLOG this post to spread the word! I will promo everyone who gives this a signal boost.

Thank you Rae (padaleckhi) for the gorgeous graphic.

You shouldn't raise the price of your commissions at all. You make fantastic artwork for 20 dollars. It is a perfect price.

Wow I’m sorry but that made me feel really degraded. I wasn’t going to raise it to $100 or something. It’s a perfect price to a buyer, but my art isn’t worth 20 dollars but that’s not my point.

Yes I know it’s a good deal, but I’m not a robot. Even if I’m someone that “sucked” at drawing, the matter is all about the time spent on my drawings. On average it takes me 6 hours to create 20 dollars worth of a drawing. That’s like 3.3ish dollars an hour. Working all day. Possibly no sleeping until the next day. No breaks except to use the bathroom or to eat 1 cup of ramen or not eat at all. Because of the time limits I’m receiving.

Please keep in mind the only reason people ever charge 20 dollars for a commission is due of the crippling trend of amateur artists selling themselves short at those prices- a trend that artists like Rinji has to compete with. Any self respecting artist knows that is hardly an acceptable price for their works. Rinji knows that. And that is why I applaud them for raising their prices because it is our responsibility as artists to educate people like you that a 20 dollar commission is not a perfect price at all.

I hope you have learned something from this, anon, and please, never, ever assume nor determine the price of an artist’s time if you are the client and they are their own employer. The price is set by them and it is your choice to either comply or move on.

can we talk about how living wage is $15/hr? Can we talk about how artists should have THAT as a baseline, and because they are SKILLED WORKERS IN THEIR PROFESSION, should actually be charging even more? I charge at around $15-$20/hr. My dad’s a freelance graphic designer and has been in the industry for over 20 years; he charges $80/hr. Rinji works at a little over $3/hr can we talk about how the expectation for low commission prices is a issue, or…? because $100 is NOT a ridiculous price. At ALL. That’s ~$16.60/hour for a 6 hour commission, which is cheap as hell. I mean I get why people price the way they do; competition. HOWEVER: Each commissioner is commissioning YOU because they like YOUR style. Usually? People are more than willing to pay more. Fuck, dude. I worked at a place that sold knife sets for like $2000/set, and people ate that shit up. People spend money on whatever they want as long as they know it’ll be quality work that they’ll enjoy.

^This.

We should really be encouraging our fellow artists to charge themselves as they would as a professional. You’re offering your services because you know your art is worth doing business with. If we’re not going to stand up for our own industry, no one will.
