The new season 12 writer, Steven Yockey, has previously written tons of LGBT books/stories.
I can’t wait for the gay.
And he’s gay himself! Our third openly gay writer. I am loving this ratio. This is what I’m here for.
DOES THIS MEAN WE’LL FINALLY GET OUR GAY? PLEASE LET US HAVE OUR GAY.
We’ve…. had at least one gay writer on the show since the sixth season (that we know of). The only difference now is that straight guys are in the minority. The sexualities of the writers have no bearing on the content of the show, though.
I wonder why he’s branching into TV writing since he’s been a playwright for so long.
Also this doesn’t really mean anything. If anything is going to happen with Cas and Dean, it won’t be because three staff writers are gay. Staff writers have very little power, especially new ones. It’s ultimately the shower runners and the studio’s decision.
Yes, I want to emphasize this. I am infinitely more concerned about real live LGBT people than fictional ones, and it’s great that we have more voices in the writers’ room, but they are under no obligation to write anything other than what they want to write and/or have been hired to write.
I think he knows someone on the show. I swear to God I’ve visited his twitter before, and it has to have been from the twitter of one of the writers (don’t hold me to this, though, I have a very vague recollection – but I distinctly remember having gone to his twitter months ago). Berens?
Maybe? I mean, Supernatural has been the first professional TV writing job for a few people. Jenny Klein, Andrew Dabb, Daniel Loflin, and Cathryn Humphris didn’t write for TV before Supernatural. For a lot more people it was their first job where they were producers as well as writers like Gamble, Tucker, Carver, Thompson, and probably more. I think even Krikpe barely did any production work at all, which is why they put him with Rob Singer. So Supernatural has always been the kind of show that has hired people just starting out in TV or with not much if any experience in being a producer.
I’m sure there were writers even in Krikpe’s and Gamble’s time who would have been supportive and encouraging of Dean being bi, Cas having romantic tension with a guy, or with one of the making it known to the audience that they like the other, and all that but it wasn’t their choice. I think that when people get mad at the writers, they need to understand how the process of television writing works so they don’t get made at the wrong people.
The other new recruit Meredith Glynn seems to be starting out too, and I do think it’s great that the show both has offered new writers opportunities and has helped them develop their craft (let’s not forget that Singer co-wrote Carver’s first episode with him because he was new and unsure at the time).
I was just having a private conversation with someone over Bob Singer, and people just don’t give him, John Shiban and Kim Manners enough credit for lifting this show off the ground. Of these three Manners unfortunately passed away and Shiban has moved onto new projects, but Singer is still here, grinding away and he is instrumental to the show. Writers are easy targets, and it’s always easier to blame one person, I guess. That whole discourse is somewhat alien to me because I continue to like the show as is.
