Remember Billie over in the Empty? She’s got Jack. She’s got the Shadow.
Rowena just triggered a magic soul-trap death spell which filled her with souls and the infinite potential that lies before death. Which she ONLY did because Billie told her and Sam a prophecy that Sam would kill her. Rowena might be dead, a passing tool of Billie-as-Death trying to avert the ghospocalypse. But that end goal seems a bit…small for Billie, doesn’t it? I prefer to think that Rowena’s another piece added to team Death for the truly BIG PICTURE game yet to come.
Billie’s setting up a chess board. What’s her game?
The same game Cas was playing trading any hope of future happiness to the Shadow in exchange for Jack’s soul in 14.08.
He’s got that… no hope of happiness ever, right? And Rowena’s fulfilled her prophecy, too… there’s a bigger game happening here.
billie: u died jack, im here to reap u
jack: gotta ask my dads first
billie: wha-

SUPER POWERFUL LADY CHARACTERS AND DEAN GETTING BEAT UP YEEEE
Billie, the new Death
Billie has updated the ring
I mean… there’s a reason I’ve been screaming that Billie was the new Death since 11.02:
BILLIE: O death, o death, o death won’t you spare me over another year? Oh, what is this that I can’t see with ice-cold hands taking hold of me? When God is gone and the devil takes hold who’ll have mercy on your soul?” BILLIE: Hey, Sam. SAM: How do you know my name? Who are you? BILLIE: Mm. Think you mean “what?” Here’s a hint. You and your brother been real good for business lately. SAM: You’re a Reaper. BILLIE: The circle gets the square.
Apropos of nothing, that awesome moment when she’s taking off her gloves… how does the scythe remain upright?
*goosebumps*

let us have a moment of silence for @elizabethrobertajones who will be waking up to 1) BILLIE 2) CAS 3) JENSEN GOT A TATTOO?!?
shouldn’t it more logically be a moment of screaming?
yes, but don’t wake her! We should plan something. She’s gonna need support.
This feels like that sarahanderson comic. We’re all just waiting her to wake up…
fare thee well, oh honey, fare thee well ♫

Good answer.
i think parallels are rarely ever perfect mirror images in this show, and they can be mirrors for multiple characters at once. i mean, werewolf guy was also in plaid? i personally interpreted it as dean thinking about both sam and cas and how much losing them would affect him. speaking of broad applications, i was also thinking about what billie said to dean, those things about selfishness. could they not also be applied to dean and cas? for me, anyway, there's room for interpretation there.
There’s definitely no such thing as a perfect mirror image character on this show. That would be incredibly dull, just from a writing standpoint.
I’m not sure exactly what you’re referring to that Dean was thinking about both Sam and Cas (I’ve made a lot of posts in the last couple of hours pffft). And I agree, anyway. A lot of the parallels made could refer to any number of things, and specifically a lot of them could be referring to both Sam and Cas, from Dean’s perspective. This show has been telling two parallel stories for a while now. Last week’s episode gave us that very clearly by literally telling us two stories that were actually the SAME STORY, overlapping through time. This weeks episode just built on that premise, even using some of the same sorts of time jumps to tell the story as 11.16 did, just much closer together. Instead of years apart, the story is now days apart. I thought that was pretty clever, and certainly added to the urgency of 11.17′s action. So yeah, I think they are intentionally giving us dual parallels.
I just went back to watch Billie’s speech to Dean (pffft peak Baio, Billie knows what’ll get Dean to choke on his burgers… ANYHOO).
Billie is legitimately confused at first:
Dean: We need to talk about Sam.
Billie: What about Sam?
Dean: I need him back.
Billie: Back?
The first reason she passes on the “deal” Dean wants to make with her is that SHE DOESN’T HAVE SAM. SAM IS NOT DEAD, NOR IN DANGER OF IMMINENT DEATH. She was genuinely perplexed as to why Dean thought Sam was dead. Which rang bells in my head, because of the two of them, Sam seemed… a lot more dead than Dean did. Billie even said it AGAIN here, that she’s on every reaper’s speed dial if one of the Winchesters goes belly-up. Look how fast she made it to Dean’s side. Did she even bother to show up to nudge Sam with the toe of her boot? Nope. Sam wasn’t even “mostly dead.” Without a pulse. Not breathing. Out for at least a few hours (it was night, and then it was day!). Some time passed. And not a peep out of a reaper all that time? That’s… stretching the plausibility of medical science, and verging on the not-natural, if you know what I mean. But I digress… (I do that a lot)
Dean gives his impassioned little speech about the Darkness and how Sam’s the only one who can stop it. Billie’s not buying it. But then she says even if she knew 100% that Sam was the only one who could save the world, she still wouldn’t bring him back for Dean. She’s gonna stick to her word. I admire that. That’s very Dean-like, no?
But then she started walking away. She was threatening to reap Dean there, but she turned to leave the room. That didn’t seem very reaperly to me. She turned her back on him and tried to walk away.
And how strange was it that her threat to take him to the Empty was what drove him back to consciousness? Interesting, again.
I think there’s a lot more going on here than a simple straight (pffft, straight) parallel.
I definitely need to watch this whole episode again.
