There’s a difference between killing a baby and killing someone who killed a baby

You are in an IVF clinic. 

It catches fire. 

You’re in a room that has a 3-month-old baby and a cooled container with hundreds of viable embryos. The room is collapsing as the flames encroach. 

You only have time to save one. Which do you save? Hundreds of “babies” or an actual baby?

There is a car accident. 

There is a woman who is 7 weeks pregnant and a 2-year-old child in the back seat. 

Both are injured. 

The woman will live, but her pregnancy is in jeopardy. The 2-year-old is dying. 

You only have time to administer life-saving care to the 2-year-old child or save the pregnancy. What do you do? 

The answer to both is you save the actual living breathing baby because I assume you are not a fool. You know there is a difference between a baby and a fetus. You just pretend otherwise because you think making bad faith arguments will be more effective than dealing with the reality. 

Maybe you think a mass of cells clinging to a uterus should not be terminated for whatever reason. But in almost every instance of abortion that is what we’re talking about. Not a baby. So please argue accordingly. 

And please do not bring up late-term abortions. They are very rare and almost never wanted. It’s usually a very tragic circumstance and dragging people into this debate that had to choose between their life and a pregnancy they very much wanted is really shitty. So don’t be shitty. 

Per the CDC, 66% of abortions take place within 8 weeks. 92% take place within 13 weeks. 1.2% occur after 21 weeks. 

Also, none of that changes the fact that killing people for any reason seems contrary to what pro-lifers claim to believe. I’m pretty sure there is even a commandment about that. It’s hypocrisy of the highest order. 

The death penalty has never been a useful deterrent and about 4% of people on death row could very well be innocent. Are you okay killing innocent people? Because that is what supporting the death penalty means. It’s also more expensive than life in prison and studies show it rarely brings comfort to anyone justice-wise. 

I want abortions to be safe and rare. Not because I think it is immoral, but because not having the procedure is preferable to the time, money, and energy the process requires. 

I want free contraception and comprehensive sex education. Which has been proven to reduce unwanted pregnancies.

Perhaps in the future abortions will be needed so infrequently people will stop having such bloodlust for folks who have the nerve to want to control their own bodies.

Senator Wendy Davis is a fucking badass.

There’s this bill that they are trying to pass in Texas that would make it illegal to get any abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, and would make it very difficult for abortion centers to continue doing what they do. Governor Rick Perry has already said that if the bill makes it to his desk, he will sign it. And Wendy Davis said fuck no that is not happening.

So she’s filibustering it. That means she asked to talk on the subject at 11:18 this morning, and if she can continue talking about abortion until 11:59 tonight, the bill won’t reach Governor Perry, and they would have to start all over with the bill next time they meet- 2 years from now.

But Wendy has to keep talking. She can’t pause for even a minute, not for food or a sip of water or to go to the bathroom or sit down. She can’t even lean up against anything, or she’s out. So she’s wearing motherfucking PINK NIKE TENNIS SHOES in the middle of the state senate.

She also has to continue talking about the topic. She sent out tweets an other messages last night asking for anyone and everyone’s abortion story, and received a shit load of answers. Her staff is still collecting them, and she’s reading them aloud to the senate. Not only is she making this bill impossible to pass, she may just change some minds while she’s at it.

This is history, guys. Wendy Davis is a motherfucking badass, and we are watching it happen.
