Does Gwen Cooper just feel like an ahead of her time character to anyone?

She fits perfectly in the messy female leads media trend of the late 2010s/20s, with shows such as Fleabag, Killing Eve etc.. seriously influencing tv trends etc, but for 2006, a female character whose flaws and mistakes are given as much focus, and frankly as much grace, as a man's was pretty bloody rare.

For her to be taking centre stage in a sci-fi show filled with danger and action, the character whose journey most closely represents that of the "hero's journey", while Rhys takes on the role of the love interest on the side-lines who resents the hero's focus on their work, was fairly gender breaking.

I think that's why Gwen had such a backlash from certain fans when the show came out, fans who were used to sci-fi centring the male character, where female characters were either harpies or secondary support. Why certain fans resented screen time they feel she "stole" from Ianto.

It's also why I think, despite being on screen only for a few years, she's still such an iconic Doctor Who character today.

That she's 2006 female lead who would fit perfectly in the 2020s female lead landscape shows how forward thinking RTD was with his writing for her, and Eve just played her so perfectly, I can't really thank them enough.

(and if anyone wants a copy of that commentary track btw i made an mp3 of it all you gotta do is ask. just sayin'. just so you know.)
