In quick succession we got big announcements from Amazon, Apple, and Nintendo. Though they're releasing different products, all three are competing for headline space and your dollar in a weak economy.
Who came out the winner? All Access Weekly has your answer.
This morning's announcement from Nintendo:
The Wii U will arrive in stores on November 18th and will come in two models:
Both versions will have 1 GB of RAM for game memory & 1 GB for system memory.
4x the storage for only $50 more? I can't imagine too many will opt for the Basic.
UPDATE - Nintendo also announced the TVii (a gimmicked spelling but still pronounced "tee vee" though it looks more like "tee vee eye eye"), a video service that incorporates Hulu Plus, Amazon Video, and TiVo into one interface. Wii U compatibility with these services in addition to Netflix and YouTube had already been announced last Spring.
Amazon and Apple have had their turns, and now it's Nintendo that takes the stage this morning.
Nintendo is expected to announce the price and release date of the Wii U at 10am EST / 7am PST.
What we already know is that it'll be backwards compatible with the Wii, right down to the peripherals. It'll also feature the Wii U Gamepad (shown above), which has a touch screen that will exist as both a supplemental screen for gameplay as well as the main display if the user chooses to turn off the television or use it for something else, making it something of a combined set-top and portable gaming console.
The Gamepad will also have a gyroscope, accelerometer, and support "near-field communication" that can interact with other devices including credit cards that are compatible with the interface. A camera and bluetooth will also come standard.
The Wii U will also be used to expand the pre-existing Nintendo Network, their answer to the Playstation Network and X-Box Live that is currently available for the Nintendo 3DS. It'll allow users to download new and pre-existing titles, as well as providing online multiplayer and interaction with other gamers. The Wii U's Nintendo Network will also include fNetflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube, and Amazon Instant Video.
I was always more of a GamePro kid, but it's still sad to see. Truly the end of an era.
