Joseph Beuys, Unschlitt/Tallow, 1977, Twenty tons of tallow fat cut into six elements, Marx Collection, Hamburger Bahnhof
Unschlitt/Tallow was created in summer 1977 for the exhibition Skulptur in Münster. Joseph Beuys filled a dead space of a concrete construction for a pedestrian tunnel with animal fat. The senseless urban construction was to be transformed with a healing substance. Fat, a source of energy for the body, was used as a positive substance to rescue a cold, wounded place. After being removed from the mold, the sculpture was cut into six segments which comprise the work.
