How do you read it? (2)

Isolano can be read in two ways (and has two/three different meanings):

ìsolano => from the verb isolare (to isolate), 3rd plural person (loro isolano = they isolate (sb))

isolàno = inhabitant of an island (islander), or something relative of an island (insular)

An example of a sentence containings both could be:

Le tempeste isolano l’isolano. = Le tempeste ìsolano l’isolàno. => Storms isolate the islander.

[usually the accents aren’t written: I only used them to show you where to put them while reading/speaking. You only understand the meaning according on the pronunciation or the context - if you only find them written]

Adding a short pronunciation video

Guess the gender

Are feminine:

  • -tion nouns (Action, Lactation)
  • -o borrowed English words (Vidéo, Radio)
  • regular -eur nouns (Chaleur, Fleur) as opposed to 'fancy' existential concepts (Malheur, Honneur)
  • -ère, -(t)rice, -euse job titles (Boulangère, Actrice, Coiffeuse)
  • -twice the same consonant+e nouns, adjectives, pronouns (Princesse, Feuille, Quelle, Cette, Grosse) - expect Gramme
  • most -ée nouns (Mariée, Durée) - except greek words Apogée, Lycée, Scarabée
  • many -e nouns (Bouteille, Douche)
  • most -oix nouns (Noix, Voix) - except Choix
  • disciplines (Littérature, Physique)
  • continents (Afrique, Océanie)
  • -e countries and regions (Bretagne, Italie)

Are masculine:

  • most -consonant nouns (Chien, Matelas)
  • -er, -(t)eur job titles (Fermier, Facteur)
  • -ail/eil nouns (Orteil, Travail)
  • -euil/ueil nouns (Fauteuil, Accueil)
  • -asme, -isme nouns (Enthousiasme, Féminisme)
  • certain -e nouns (Livre, Mérite)
  • -eau nouns (Jumeau, Pinceau)
  • -scope nouns (Microscope, Téléscope)
  • -oire nouns, most likely (Auditoire) - expect Passoire
  • -ment nouns (Enterrement, Habillement)
  • cardinal points (Ouest, Nord)
  • languages (Italien, Polonais)
  • days, months, seasons (Hiver, Janvier)
  • trees (Chêne, Saule pleureur)
  • not -e countries and regions (Maroc, Japon)

Depends:

  • (Amitié, Résumé) - existential concepts are feminine (Beauté, Charité), simple words seem to often be masculine (Karaté, Été); exceptions: Acné, Clé, Psyché
  • -age nouns - masculine if it's added to an existing prefix, feminine if not (Le claquage, Le mirage, La page, La rage)

Hello! i really want to learn french but have no idea where to start if you have may you give resources on this

yesss ok so i learned french in school so im like advanced now, so some of these i actively use and some of them i just found from searching:

textbooks

i’m just going to link you to my whole dropbox, i have 6 french textbooks on there (personally i would probably start with french living language)

youtube channels

Inner French - i think this guy is great for any level! he speaks super slow and teaches you how to speak french naturally

FrenchPod101 - great for listening practice especially!

Comme une Française TV - I think she’s great and super helpful and clear!

other resources

wordreference - my favorite french dictionary!

linguee - literally amazing for finding example sentences & learning words in context

memrise - i said this before but i think the app is way better than the desktop website bc it’s less stressful lmao anyway it’s great for vocab

Coffe Break French - a podcast! i use coffee break swedish and i think it’s a great series for listening & it’s available in a variety of levels

Lingua - for reading practice at a variety of levels (A1-B2)

The French Experiment - French children’s stories

Paralleltext.io - not for when you’re an absolute beginner but it has dual language stories for reading practice

1000 most common french words - tbh don’t start here but it’s nice for some core vocab!

Lingolia - for learning grammar

Verbix - for verb conjugations!

music recs

modern artists: cœur de pirate, stromae, pomme, angèle, vendredi sur mer, videoclub, clara luciani, christine & the queens

older artists: françoise hardy, dalida, jacques brel, barbara, jeanne moreau, édith piaf

bonsoir !

nuit does indeed mean night! bonsoir is good evening. it could be night but unless they’re going to bed, you’re still wishing them a good evening. even if it’s midnight, if they aren’t literally going to bed, its bonsoir. if they’re off to bed, it’s bonne nuit !

thank you! does that mean since they were going to bed bonne nuit is also appropriate?

yep!! i'd definitely use that more than bonsoir there

Es. Je suis fatigué. Et toi? Moi aussi. / Elle n'est pas sympa! Lui non plus. / Jo a faim. Pas moi.
Per rinforzare il soggetto e marcare un contrasto, utilizziamo un pronome tonico. Es. Je suis en forme, et toi? Moi, je suis fatiguée. !! Non dire "moi, je..." per iniziare una conversazione.

ciaooo perché non cominciamo mai con ‘moi, je’? sembra maleducato o semplicemente non è coretto senza il pronome tonico prima?
