Shower thought, coming through!

I realized that the official cast recording of Wicked's "Popular" omits the "I'm Not That Girl" motif when Glinda tells Elphaba she's beautiful. Now, I think this was a bit of a missed moment.

See, when that motif first comes up, we don't know what it means, it's just a pretty tune. So when it pops up as a full song later, we retroactively know what that motif means, mainly being down that you're lesser than the other girl (which isn't true). However, there's one thing that gets me about the first time we hear that motif.

(I'm a music nerd, so bear with me)

Elphaba's version is in A Major, and Glinda's, later in the show, is in C Major. What key is the one in Popular? C MAJOR. We're meant to think that Elphaba is thinking of herself that she's not that girl when she looks in that mirror, when really, it's GLINDA thinking that. Let's face it, Glinda barely changed how Elphaba looked (she unbraided her hair, took her glasses off, and put a flower in her hair. Not major.), so this is Glinda seeing how naturally beautiful Elphaba is and how she may not feel that way about herself, deep down.

TLDR; Glinda fell for Elphaba first and you can hear it in the music.

I could be thinking too hard on this, but what isn't Tumblr if not a space for people to be over analytical about moments for a non-canon ship. ^_^

Honestly who gave Wicked the RIGHT to express what's expressed in For Good.

You've changed me and I've changed you. Permanently and inescapably and completely and nearly beyond recognition, certainly beyond being able to undo it or even knowing where to start, where to begin to untangle the twisted threads of our intertwined lives.

Was the change for the better? I'm not sure. The change has been too deep and too complete; i don't know who i am without you.

But i think it was for the better. In any case it was for good.
